A dedicated thread for discussing everyone's favourite Mandarin speaking Mancunian and, his YouTube channel, HDTVTEST. *bing*

Vincent attempted to carry out some nice analysis of 4K UHD titles recently using as much objectivity as possible.
While it is expected that a 4K UHD will perform better than a blu-ray, the pertinent questions are in what way and by what degree. I expect a 4K UHD to deliver on at least 2 of the 3 key parameters (if not on all) below (esp. considering its "premium" format tag over the blu-ray): a) Resolution b) WCG c) Dynamic range If Vincent is expected to engage with us, I would like to know what his benchmarks are for the respective categories. For catalog titles, there could be a few exceptions as a 4K restoration using the latest technology would improve an old transfer in general. |

Have you got many 4K releases that aren't 4K, zen007?
If we look at one criteria, say HDR (lets call this tier HDR500) how would we evaluate it? How long must the content hit 500 nits? Are credits and titles included? what about subtitled films? |

This is at least a better solution than filling up threads with mostly off-topic discussions. Apart from this "Fake HDR" debacle I'm not sure what there really is to discuss here though, at least for now.

Oh Vincent is never short of a talking point. Hopefully he can be encouraged to come back and discuss stuff.

I am mainly talking in terms of DI for category "a". For e.g. does Vincent consider transfers with 4K DI as the benchmark? If yes, then a transfer with a 2K DI may need to do well in the rest of the categories to be considered among top discs (or do we need a new label?).

![]() We are not talking about exceptions. For e.g. there is bell curve: ![]() Utilizing it, one can see how the benchmarks perform. I would not consider titles, subtitles (take the film in its original language for e.g.), credits, etc., unless there is a reason to consider those. Once we know where to get started, the rest can fall into its place. |

I'm not sure we need to bring (or why Vincent brought it up) stops (the doubling or halving of light) into the equation as it's more applicable to the point of capture (as it concerns the camera aperture or censor) and not the point of output, which is measured in nits.

Having the correct metadata on the specifications is probably the best start. But like we've said there are those that are fine with varying content and there are those that aren't but may not understand the reasons as to why it is varied (but would still find some value in seeing the highest value on the box). |

I watched a UHD disc the other day that had a MaxFALL of 73.😳 73! That would send poor Vincent into cardiac arrest. #FakeHDR
