Default Sony Removes Buying PS3/PS Vita and PSP Games And DLC From The Website Store And App

Quote:
Rumors suggest that Sony’s PlayStation Store on mobile and browser may soon remove the ability to buy PS3, PSP, and PS Vita content. French site Planète Vita reported receiving screenshots of an email allegedly sent by Sony promoting a large overhaul coming to the PlayStation Store. The report was then relayed by tipster Wario64 via tweet:

The update, scheduled for October 19th and 28th, 2020, will target the PlayStation Store website and mobile app. The update would supposedly remove the ability to wishlist or purchase content for the PS3, PSP, and PS Vita when visiting the PSN store via the site or mobile app. Device-based access, however, would be unaffected, meaning Vita, PS3, and PSP owners would be able to access the store through their respective devices. Any previously purchased content would remain downloadable, as well.

Among other changes reported by another story on Push Square, the update would end up wiping existing wishlists, possibly in advance of a store-wide revamp ahead of the PlayStation 5’s launch.

If true, the PlayStation Store update rumors could prove unpopular. While the PSP, Vita, and PS3 have long been considered “legacy” hardware, many people still own them, and new developments still arrive even today. For example, in July 2020 PS3 players of Metal Gear Solid V achieved the only legitimate instance of total (in-game) nuclear disarmament. Similarly, the PS Vita and PSP, while never hugely successful outside Japan and Asia, still gathered a sizeable fanbase and a number of still exclusive titles. Until recently, the PS Vita (and its PS TV spinoff) was the only place to play Persona 4 Golden.

Additionally, while the device-based access will be retained, many users report accessing the PlayStation Store on the legacy platforms has been a suboptimal experience at best, full of bugs or stability problems. True or not, fans of the PS3, PSP, and Vita are would probably do well to download what they can or take stock of their physical copies, just in case.

I'm just hoping this doesn't block me from viewing the entire game catalog as I often have to check for PS3/PS4 versions just to make certain. I also worry this will be the beginning of the sunset phase for legacy consoles/devices and there's still too many exclusives, plus all the dlc to games I haven't even had the time to get into due to my backlog.

SilicaAndPina created a Firefox a plug-in that lets fans use the old PlayStation store website. Users can regain access to the legacy storefront to purchase games on old hardware using Mozilla Firefox. Sony’s current browser-based store only allows users to buy PS4 and PS5 titles. The previous website had PSP, PS Vita, and PS3 games.

Using a new browser plug-in on Mozilla Firefox called “Valkyrie PS Store,” players can access the fully functional storefront. That means buying PS3 and PS Vita games, as well. SilicaAndPina explained in the below video that once he realized Sony’s chihiro API was still accessible, it got him thinking. It turns out that Sony didn’t kill the old website so much as it removed some HTML files to prevent access to the API. Using the Wayback Machine and archive.org, SilicaAndPina was able to launch the old PlayStation store website on Firefox.

Here is SilicaAndPina’s video showing how to use it. The creator of the plugin is known for work on PlayStation system workarounds.

The PlayStation Store has been a hot topic over the past several months. The browser-based website received several updates in preparation for the PS5’s launch, including killing and reintroducing the wishlist feature. In March 2021, Sony removed the ability to purchase PS3, PS Vita, and PSP games on its web-based store. Additionally, the company announced it would shut down the prior mentioned stores. However, most recently, Sony reversed its decision to close the PS3 and PS Vita stores for now. Unfortunately, the PSP store will still shut down on July 2, 2021.

While Sony Ended Up Keeping The Ability To Buy PS3, Vita and PSP Games. But Now You Can Only Buy Them Through PSN Store Cards Only Making CERO Z Rated Games Impossible To Purchase.

Quote:
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it will remove the credit card, debit card, and PayPal payment methods from the PS3 and PS Vita stores on October 27, 2021. After this date, customers will only be able to add funds on the aforementioned platforms with PlayStation Store gift cards. The company also assured that direct payments with PayPal, credit cards, and debit cards will still be available on the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile storefronts.

This change will apply to all regions worldwide, but it will have an additional consequence in Japan. Purchases of titles with a CERO Z rating on digital platforms in Japan, including the PS3 and Vita, require a credit card to verify the customer’s age. The Japanese support page confirmed that purchasing age-restricted games on the platforms will no longer be possible after this update. However, existing owners of such titles will still be able to download the games and buy their respective DLC.

Sony Interactive Entertainment initially planned to shut down the PS3, PS Vita, and PSP stores between July and August 2021. However, it pulled back from the decision after massive user feedback. The PS3 and Vita stores remained open for the foreseeable future. Only the PSP store shuttered as scheduled in July 2021.

I may just quit buying though I haven't in awhile but now its too complicated to get a game off the store unless I use a giftcard.

though there really isn't anything I really want on the store. I will just get actual discs if I find something I like. Honestly I had a bigger PS2 collection and hardly played it and got rid of it so having a small collection for PS3 is better.

I was using PSN cards anyway. By getting them at Best Buy with my credit card, I get 5% back in the form of Best Buy dollars.

I was hearing this has to do with something related to card security and aging hardware, which is why they don't want personal information on these systems being used any longer. It does sound pretty reasonable limiting to cards and things like mobile/pc to add funds since the majority of us are equipped to use them at this time.

Now far as being able to still purchase content, they haven't announced major delistings and right now is still a good time as any to finish up getting the missed titles, or any additional content that you might have missed. I was planning to work pick up that FF trilogy ending with Lightning Returns and Tales of Xillia since I've put them off for so long that they've fallen off the backlog.

Only if you have a PSN Store Card that is enough to pay for it. Just no Credit Card, Debit Card, PayPal, etc. which is the same with everything else on the PSN Store.

You can use credit cards, you just have to add the funds to your account via a PS4 or PS5, or on a computer, then you can make the purchase directly on the PS3.
