I can get this at a great discounted price and wanted to know if anyone here has one or has used one enough to give me a solid review. The price is selling me but I want to make sure.

The primary benefit you'll enjoy is the ability of the receiver to recognize and decode 'all' the advanced audio codecs. I sell this receiver, as well as a Pioneer Elite, an Onkyo Integra, and a Denon, that all share the same benefits as the Sony ES. So, your choice is very good. [Jim]

Make sure it has the updated firmware. Check the Sony website and the serial number of the unit you are buying. The early ones had some component>HDMI issues and some HD audio issues. The 5300 and 5200 are otherwise very similar, aside from the six HDMI inputs which is extremely nice on the 5300 and some HD audio/video capabilities that the 5200 does not have.

I have the 4300ES. My wife... yes... wife got us the 5300ES, but I didn't feel the extra 3 HDMI inputs was worth the difference in price (she paid $1500 +tax) so we returned it. I picked up the 4300ES sealed with warranty for only $750 and have been thrilled with it. The GUI interface is cool. The automatic speaker calibration rocks and the Ipod input (via the dock) is awesome too!

Got my 4300ES on Ebay for $780 shipped, there are several dealers that sell them for similar pricing and all seem very reputable with High Positive feeback. I wanted the 5300ES but it's still over $300 more than the 4300ES and I don't need 3 extra HDMI right now...but I'm sure I'll regret that in 2-3 years.

I own a 5300.
It's a fantastic AVR. Personally, I'm already using 4 HDMI slots. So, I've 2 left with room to breathe. Sound wise - It's beautiful. I've not heard the competitors amps, so I can't compare sound. However, I run HDMA, TrueHD and 7.1 PCM. I've yet to have any complaint. I used to have a Yamaha amp and this is simply light years ahead sound wise. I have 7 speakers - when a lossless codec is playing each speaker outputs pure, crisp and rich sounds. I don't bother with any of the programmed features. Out of the box this AVR offers fantastic features plus excellent sound quality. A bonus feature - all 3 component inputs will upconvert to 1080p. This means that your HD cable box goes in at 720p/1080i but comes onto your TV is a fairly decent upconvert. This is a quantum leap over my old setup where SD programming was virtually unwatchable. However, when coupled with a Sony Bravia TV the thatre sync makes it worth it. It switches between video/audio perfectly. 1 button on your AVR remote and you've changed the channel + audio (without a universal remote). EDIT: I would check the audio specs on the 4300. When searching sony.ca I could find the ES3300, which doesn't have trueHD or HDMA. I'd confirm the 4300 covering all audio codecs. I also love the audio calibration and the GUI interface. electonics-net is the seller i bought from, guys name is Joe. He has over 3000 feedback and 99.3% positive. Seems like a good deal. If you want to wait until mine comes in and everythings cool with my purchase let me know and I'll tell you how it goes. I emailed to ask him if he could do $780 flat instead of $792 and he said no problem.

Found the 5300es on the Sony Style page as a refurbished unit for $1199. Does anyone know if by "refurbished", they mean that these are the returned units that were having the original HDMI firmware issues that were causing connectivity issues with devices other than Sony, and have now had the firmware updated?
Price seems good, but see nothing on the page regarding warranty. |
