Default Steven Soderbergh on Blu-ray

US releases

-The Criterion King of the Hill BD includes The Underneath as a bonus feature.
-The BD of Full Frontal is an extended cut, 10 mins longer than the theatrical cut. It's unclear whether this was an intentional director's cut, as it's not labelled as that, and Soderbergh has never mentioned it as that, or if the wrong version of the film was mastered in HD by accident. The BD includes the theatrical cut in SD as a bonus feature, but with Soderbergh's audio commentary as the only audio track.
- The Bubble BD includes the audio commentary and Soderbergh interview, but leaves off the cast commentary, deleted scenes, EPK interviews, audition tapes and photo galleries from the DVD.

Only available on foreign BD

- Soderbergh said in an interview that he completed a 4K HDR version of Solaris for Fox, just before it ceased to exist. It has never been released anywhere. The German BD is the only HD physical media release of the film in the world, it uses the HD master from the original 2003 DVD.

UHD

- The Limey UHD was a retailer exclusive at Best Buy. They no longer sell physical media, so it's OOP.
- note that the Oceans Trilogy UHDs drop almost all the featurettes, trailers and other video bonus features from the BDs.

Only available on DVD

-the theatrical cut of Full Frontal with film audio is only available on DVD

Only available on foreign DVD

Streaming projects
His Netflix films have not had physical media releases, nor are they likely to have them. They are not available anywhere for digital purchase, unfortunately. They can only be viewed on Netflix, with current membership.

HIGH FLYING BIRD - Netflix
THE LAUNDROMAT - Netflix

His three HBO Max films are easier to watch. Aside from that streaming service (recently renamed Max), they can be purchased as digital downloads at Amazon and other retailers, and they've been released on DVD.

LET THEM ALL TALK - Max
NO SUDDEN MOVE - Max
KIMI - Max

Amazon digital links:
https://www.amazon.com/Kimi-Zo%C3%AB...dp/B09S63F7ZM/
https://www.amazon.com/Let-Them-Talk...dp/B09VNYGW48/
https://www.amazon.com/No-Sudden-Mov...dp/B09S61MQNY/

His 2023 Max miniseries can only be watched on Max:

FULL CIRCLE - Max

He also released a short streaming project in 2023 that can only be viewed on his website:

COMMAND Z - Extension 765

Seven of Soderbergh's smaller films have reverted to his personal ownership:

Kafka
Schizopolis
Gray’s Anatomy
Full Frontal
Bubble
The Girlfriend Experience
And Everything Is Going Fine

- he completely re-edited Kafka and has also said he recorded a new audio track in German
- he re-edited Schizopolis and Full Frontal
- he has not altered the other four

He plans to reissue all seven films in remastered editions:

The proper cut of "Eros" was only released on a Hong Kong disc (region-free, I believe), although the cuts and changes don't affect the Soderbergh segment. It's uncut, in the correct order, and the Antonioni segment is in English (as originally shot).

I think you could also list "discs where Soderbergh participates in the bonus features"; he is on a few commentary tracks like "Catch 22" and "Pleasantville" (IIRC), and he did a "short film" for a Criterion disc ("End of the Road") 'cause he loved the movie so much.

Oh, also, "Winston" is only on the 'sex, lies, and videotape' Criterion laserdisc.

I didn't even notice it at first, but it's weird that he's doing remastered versions of the two Criterion Spalding Gray movies. But I'm sure it will be good for a digital archive at least. I suspect they won't get a physical release, unless Criterion is putting out a big box set. I know that there have been one or two upgrade releases, but for 'And Everything Is Going Fine'? I dunno.

I agree, those seem unlikely candidates for discs, unless Criterion does a big boxset, which is plausible, since they've done a bunch of his films.

He has done a ton of audio commentaries on other directors' films, per Wikipedia:

Apartment Zero, with screenwriter/producer David Koepp
Billy Budd, with actor Terence Stamp
Catch-22, with director Mike Nichols
Clean, Shaven, with director Lodge Kerrigan
The Daytrippers, with director Greg Mottola and editor Anne McCabe
The Graduate, with director Mike Nichols
Point Blank, with director John Boorman
Seabiscuit, with director Gary Ross
Suture, with directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel
The Third Man, with screenwriter Tony Gilroy
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, with director Mike Nichols
The Yards, with director James Gray

I was probably thinking of "Seabiscuit" rather than "Pleasantville".

It's a shame we'll likely never have physical releases of his newer films:

High Flying Bird
The Laundromat - there's an FYC DVD, which I do have
Let Them All Talk - premieres in December on HBO Max, I don't think they intend to have physical releases of their exclusive programming.

I'd love it if someone would release "Fallen Angels" someday on DVD or BD in the US. It has two episodes by Soderbergh and one by Alfonso Cuarón, along with some other interesting directors.

There was apparently a French DVD in 2019, but it seems to already be OOP:

https://www.amazon.fr/Fallen-Angels-...dp/B07QK7TQ6Q/

Soderbergh's first-season episode and Cuarón's episode were released on VHS in the US. Soderbergh's second-season episode was released on DVD in the UK.

I was looking on ebay to see if I could find a FYC for "High Flying Bird", and I almost wound up buying a bootleg before I realized it. I have a friend who was doing some work with Netflix, I have been thinking of reaching out and seeing if there are any internal discs that I could score or anything. Of course, if Criterion *is* doing a box, Soderbergh might be able to arrange a proper release for his Netflix movies too.

I hope Soderbergh won't be one of those "this is the only version now" guys, I want the original "Schizopolis" intact. And I want to see how many versions of "Kafka" he has completed over the years.

There never was an FYC disc for High Flying Bird. They didn't submit it for awards, I believe. The FYC discs out there are all bootlegs with badly mocked up covers saying it's a Lionsgate title.

Anything is possible, but a boxset of the seven he personally owns seems more likely. I could be wrong, but I believe the Netflix titles that Criterion has released are all or mostly ones where the directors demanded the physical releases. Soderbergh doesn't seem that concerned about it.

He was asked about that in another interview, he said he would include both the theatrical cut of Kafka and his new one. There's just one new cut, to my knowledge, he's been working on it for a number of years, off and on, and finished it, along with the other two recuts, during lockdown.

I bet he has done some radical experimenting even if not 100% completing a cut to satisfaction, though.

I hope a rip of Winston materialises somewhere, before I have to become a laserdisc collector.

How I Won the War (BFI) features a 90 minute audio conversation between Soderbergh and Richard Lester (they also did the book together.)

Soderbergh has a cameo in Waking Life, and appears in the digital film documentary Side by Side. He’s also been the exec producer on quite a few things, most recently Bill and Ted Face the Music. Soderbergh was cinematographer on Magic Mike XXL.

A couple of things of note -

A 4K release of The Limey is set to be released in France in December. Logan Lucky is available in 4K in multiple territories.

Bubble has more extras on the DVD (but no commentary or HDNet featurette) - I own the UK DVD from Moviolla

Bursting the Bubble: The making of Bubble (11:10)
Interview with Steven Soderbergh (9:41)
Finding the cast (Interview with Dustin James Ashley - 6:04, Interview with Cathy Dobereiner - 7:59, Interview with Misty Dawn Wilkins - 5:36)
Deleted scenes with alternate ending (6:04)

Per the site, the US DVD has “cast commentary, director and crew interviews, audition tapes, deleted scenes, and photo gallery”.

I own a couple of UK releases with unique extras vs. the US

Soderbergh released some re-edits of films - Psycho, Raiders, 2001 to his website - but I don’t believe they’re still live because of piracy.

He also released this short, Your Life as a Spy, within his 2018 roundup.

https://extension765.com/blogs/soderblog/seen-read-2018

I can only find a UK VHS not DVD of that Fallen Angels episode.

I hope Schizopolis isn't new-cut only though I'd like to see what he did with it. The original cut is excellent. Super excited about Kafka though!

I have the 4K of the Limey via digital and assume it is correct in terms of film transfer. I have not watched yet, though.

The entire two-season run of Fallen Angels was released on DVD in France, I posted the link above.

One of Soderbergh's two episodes was released on DVD in the UK, they released the second season there as a series of DVDs under the title PERFECT CRIMES:

I'm going off the discussion in the thread for the UK BD. Another member presented caps that convincingly demonstrated that a technical error on the UK BD caused the 4K remaster to be presented with the wrong color range, making it desaturated.

I'm sure the actual 4K master is fine, but I have no idea if the US digital version is okay or if the upcoming French UHD will be fine.

I can’t find the series streaming anywhere (one of Soderbergh’s episodes is on YouTube), so I’ll have to track down the DVDs. Similarly, K Street has its first episode on YouTube, but the only way to watch the series seems to be on the DVD.

I didn’t know about the Yes film until this thread, but I can’t find the DVD cheap unfortunately.

As a Sidney Lumet fan, for his series 100 Centre Street, I can find an Australian DVD set but no other way of watching.
