Default Lady Oscar (Jacques Demy)

What appears to be the only Blu-Ray release in the world of Jacques Demy's Lady Oscar, his 1979 film based on Riyoko Ikeda's The Rose of Versailles, is available in Japan. Advertised as being from a 2K restoration of a 6K scan of the original negative. Has anyone here got it and would recommend?

This has my strong recommendation but I am afraid that I might be in the minority in liking this film. I do not have a state of the art Blu-Ray set up but this is a big improvement over the French PAL R2 DVD from the Integrale Jacques Demy box set. It lacks the few minutes of extras from this box but it does include an enchanting 20 minute interview with Catriona MacColl.

This was very accurately reviewed here on Mondo Digital:

I'm a fan of the film too. Haven't seen it in decades but I would snap up an English friendly Blu Ray release in an instant.

I've never seen this myself but IMDB does also list German as a language for this film, so depending on how much German is actually spoken, those bits are likely not English friendly.

99.99% of the dialogue on the Japanese LADY OSCAR Blu-Ray is in English. There is one German word (wunderbar) spoken by Christine Bohm who ably portrays (for the second time in her brief, tragic career) Marie Antionette.

This film will receive an Italian region B release via Yamato Video on February 19.

Yamato Video also released the anime with horrific noise reduction and sharpening.

Got the Japanese blu of this recently via YesAsia, then backtracked and ordered Discotek's (seemingly OOP) blu-rays of The Rose of Versailles off eBay the other day.

Looking forward to binging all of it.
