Default are you looking to go blu and need some info?

how are old movies transferred to blu ray: movies are filmed in 2k pixels and 4k pixels which is much higher than the 1080p, they just get the original super high quality film and transfer it to blu ray which is a downgrade from the original.

Check these links for most of the information you will need

Personal Opinion
I recently bought a PS3 and am happy that I didn't spend so much money on a BR DVD player....note PS3 does not include all you need for viewing the BRD comfortably......upsetting that you will need to fork over more money for HDMI cable and BR remote.....Also I will note BRD color is better and the definition higher but I am not so sure it is completely worth it for everyone, If you have loads of money I would say go for it but if you are on a budget and enjoy movies for being movies you just need a DVD player with progressive scan, which in my opinion is just as good as BR if you have never seen BR. I do definitely hear a difference in HD but I am not super impressed with the cost verse higher definition. In my opinion the movies do not pop off the screen like I had hoped, however animated movies look very awesome in BR but I don't want to pay that much just for animated movies. I think Br will get better. Note that I do not care for all the extra features that come with DVD’s or BRD's. note once again BRD's cost more that DVD's even when rented.....BR will eat your wallet......note I also had a sudden urge to buy lots of BRD's and replace my older DVD's for the latest and greatest which after thinking for a second seemed a little aggressive and not that smart, minus more money.... If I could go back I would not have bought the PS3 as it doesn't bring me that WOW I was looking for...It dented my pockets for what appears to be an expensive upgrade that wasn't all that fulfilling if I way the cost... I hope this provides some different light to you rather than these other posts praising BR in all its glory.

I will also note that when I put a standard dvd into my PS3 friends and family will let me know how much better quality the BR has than regular DVD.....funny...Placebo effect?..... a normal person can barely tell the difference.....my set is a 50" sony 1080i
