If anyone has picked this up just a quick heads up there is no English subs on the disc’s main menu however there is an English sub layer on there so if you can switch to English subs via your blu-Ray player’s controller

Thanks Huseyin for that info. It's a bit unsettling when English subs don't show up on the main menu.

Yeah I went to switch them on the menu and when It made me double check their website. I guess they are mainly authoring discs for the South Korean market so they may have overlooked English when authoring the menu.

Has anyone received this? It seems to be the only BD release out there, but is it actually good or at least decent? Or should one rather get the UK DVD for a fraction of the price?

One could also subscribe to the Criterion Channel and get this movie plus tons of others for 3 months for roughly the same price as the Nova release.

Unfortunately, I live in Germany; so AFAIK I cannot subscribe to the Criterion Channel... :-(

Well, you could. But then you wouldn't own a copy.

Hello, was listening to a podcast on this film and it was noted the current HD versions are cut by about 10 minutes. The original release was 113 min. Does anyone know if there was a good DVD release of the uncut version? Was able to find an old but decent DVDrip of the original version without hardcoded subs, but the compression and resolution is poor and I can't tell what release it was from.

Just saw your post and thought you might like to see these pics of my Mei-Ah DVD. It has a runtime of 113 mins, picture quality is typical of that label -

I first saw Eagle Shooting Heroes on Hong Kong laserdisc in 1995. I then waited 25 years before watching my Mei Ah DVD this January. The picture quality and subtitles left a lot to be desired. Beyond that, the film itself is pretty hard to get through. Although there is a stellar cast of familiar faces there is just way too much unfunny comedy. Anyway here is the HK poster which is also kind of a mess.

Just listened to it and although nobody seems to know why footage is missing the hosts speculate that the original print might be damaged. I would love to own this film in HD but not this Blu-Ray. Hopefully the missing footage can be restored or at least included as an extra in a future release.

Yeah I was trying to track down the best source of the original version with the idea of cutting the missing scenes with the HD transfer. Still not sure what the best source is. I found a DVD rip of the full length version that appears to come from a better source that doesn't have the burned in subs, but it's been resized to a lower resolution and poorly compressed. Dunno which release it was ripped from.

I have the Blu-ray of the shorter version and already thought it went on too long. I'm a big fan of Ashes of Time, which was sort of the A-production from this production team/cast so this has always been a curiosity for me. It sounds like the missing scenes are mostly part of Maggie Cheung's subplot. More Maggie is always worth preserving!

I agree. Maggie is a keeper.

Apart from the Mei-Ah release there are two other DVD's you might want to check out -

Artificial Eye - UK PAL

Kino Lorber - USA NTSC

I searched for the runtimes and got conflicting information but both of those releases are from reputable publishers so I would imagine they would look decent, probably better than my Mei-Ah copy. Just need to check those runtimes.

If you take a close look at the Kino DVD you can see an authentic Hong Kong gorilla.
