Default Prometheus 10 Years On...well almost!

I thought it was time for a re-evaluation of this movie as it's been nearly 10 years since it's release.

Firstly let me say from the start, I am a huge Ridley Scott fan, ever since first seeing Alien in 1979, then Blade Runner in late 1982 (both from their original screenings) and onwards with many of his other superb offerings since that time.

So, where to start? I have watched Prometheus maybe 5-6 times now.

The first time was on BD in 2012. I came away from that first viewing somewhat very disappointed, especially after all the hype. The 2nd and 3rd viewing just re-affirmed the sheer stupidity of it all. It is a shockingly bad movie, with such a ropey script and quite possibly some of the most stupid and unlikely candidates that any space program (let alone a private enterprise) would consider for such an important mission.

My main gripes are...

- Noomi Rapace, Ok, she's a good actress, but why would Scott choose her to be the main star over the stunning Theron? I mean let's face it, Rapace is not a looker at all. The movie would likely have been a much bigger hit if Theron was cast as Shaw.

- The Idiotic Accents, Idris Elba, he comes across as a hybrid of American meets South London. Dreadful, just dreadful acting by him. Then there's that Spall guy, another bad accent the other way around. Then there's that appalling Scottish woman, totally inaudible. Why, what was the need for all of this?

- The Stupid Plot, this must have been discussed a million times already, but it still doesn't make any sense at all, all that 'It's what I choose to believe' crap etc.

- The Hurried Exploration Of The Planet, the way they just suited up and charged off late in the day. Yes, I'm sure that real scientists and doctors would do this. We don't need to go into the idiotic antics of the crew once inside the structure as it just beggars belief.

On top of all this, I discovered one time when watching the BD with commentary that Scott had this to say...

"Ridley Scott begins a rant about people apparently questioning his ideas regarding the tabletop mapping hologram (and other parts of his "vision") inside the ship: "I do have a vision, I know exactly what I want...shut the **** up. This is what I want. **** it. That's it... I've got more films in this goddamn building, and three in the Library of Congress, and people are still going, 'what are you doing that for?'...and those people are usually very inexperienced or fundamentally stupid."

Quite unbelievable arrogance really.

I'll finish here by saying that it's simply amazing how a Director who gave us Alien (quite possibly one of the greatest movies ever made) and Blade Runner etc would have greenlit this!

Comments please?

Love the film and it was so great to get Ridley's take on the engineers and I loved that it wasn't just a dumb retread of Alien, but a further meaningful exploration of the mythology.

You have got to be kidding. It is a masterpiece alright, a masterpiece in how to mess up a franchise. He didn't help matters with the equally stupid Covenant!

I don't see what this has to do with anything. I'm sure there are Directors who have more than 2 movies in the LOC, so what!

She was good and attractive and more optimistic and naive than the kinds of cold characters Theron normally plays. She's uniquely attractive, kind of like Weaver. No one looks like Weaver. Also one of the few actresses who really works out.

I don't want all movies to have the same superstars anyway.

I dont know what it is about Ridley but to me its one of the:

1) The older he got, the more he changed and he simply lost sight of what made Alien 1 a masterpiece - tarnishing it in the process (imo)

2) he never was some genius. He simply got lucky with how good Alien 1 was and has been fumbling through Hollywood since.

Realistically to me, for every Alien there is 3 or so movies from he that have been average/terrible.

And back on topic of this Alien franchise and his insistence on ruining it, Prometheus looks stunning but is a crap film and the follow up I put as the worst Alien movie ever made.
Its just absolute trash.
He has turned the Aliens into a sidenote for Goddroids ? Pathetic.

Everyone has their own definition of pretty, if that's pretty to you then whoopee. To me, neanderthal jawlines, massive thighs and squat physiques are not. Not on a woman!

I admired the ambition but wasn't enthralled with the results. It was better than Alien 3, Resurrection or the AVP flicks but felt like the last nail in the series coffin, because even Scott returning could not resuscitate it. The movie really needed a much better script with smarter written characters. I feel Scott was working with a concept rather than a finely honed and fleshed out story.

She was the only good part of the movie. Theron was awful in it.

Ridley compounded his idiocy by killing her off for no reason for the follow up - so yeah, the only stand out aspect of Prometheus, is removed from follow ups? haha

ok Ridley

Nailed it!
His obsession with exploring Androids and all that nonsense was literally at the expense of Aliens.

Its like he was going to stop at nothing to put them on a pedestal over anything - Aliens included....in a damn Alien movie?

I love Prometheus. I had some problems with it when I first saw it, but there was still a lot to like about it. The more I watch it, the more I love it and look past any flaws.

On the other hand, I do not feel the same about Alien: Covenant, which I do not like much at all, other than the shower scene.

Ridley Scott kind of reminds me of Microsoft and their sad history of OS's

Windows 3, Huge Hit - Alien, Huge Hit
Windows 3.11 For Workgroups, Superb - Blade Runner, Hugely Influential & Loved By Fans And Critics
Windows NT 4.0, Solid, Reliable - Thelma & Louise, Solid Brilliant Movie
Windows 95, Buggy Mess - Legend, Buggy Mess
Windows ME, Dreadful - Someone To Watch Over Me, Dreadful
Windows 98, Fixed All The Flaws Of 95 - Black Rain, Back On Track
Windows 2000, Awful Mess - Hannibal, Awful Mess
Windows XP, Best Ever OS - Gladiator, Popular With The Academy

Get the picture?

That must make The Martian maybe Windows 7 (superbly crafted, best performance ever)!
Alien Covenant would be Windows 8 (truly an abortion of an OS) haha!
