Default Terminator | Anime Series (Netflix)

Quote:
The Terminator is coming back and this time he will be an anime.

Netflix and Skydance, the company that holds the rights to the long-running sci-fi franchise, have teamed up to produce an animated series based on the James Cameron-created killer robot from the future movie series.

Mattson Tomlin, who co-wrote the upcoming DC movie The Batman as well as Netflix’s own superpowered movie, Project Power, will act as showrunner and executive producer.

The series is being produced in partnership with Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, B: The Beginning) with whom Netflix has had a production line deal with since 2018.

Details of the new take were not revealed but Tomlin is known for his big and dark concepts. ¥

Netflix announced on Friday that it is partnering with Skydance and the anime studio Production I.G on an anime series in the Terminator science-fiction franchise. Mattson Tomlin (Project Power, The Batman) is serving as the showrunner and executive producer.

Production I.G President and CEO Mitsuhisa Ishikawa said, “I asked my long-time friend and colleague Mamoru Oshii what he thought about the idea of turning Terminator into an animated series. His response was 'Ishikawa, are you out of your mind?' At that instant, I was confident we should get onboard. As huge fans, our team at Production I.G is putting their heart and souls into creating this series. We hope fans will enjoy it!”

The rights holders of the Terminator franchise had planned a Termination collection of animated shorts created by leading European and Japanese "auteurs" in 2008, but the project was not released in the following year as planned. Termination would have focused on Judgment Day, the pivotal day in the Terminator franchise's multiple storylines when the Skynet defense system would launch nuclear weapons that destroy much of humanity. The iconic T-800 robot is a time-traveling weapon of Skynet, and it has been both the antagonist and protagonist in the various Terminator projects since the first film in 1984.

The T-800 did make an official, authorized cameo (pictured above) in the long-running Doraemon television anime series in June 2009. The Doraemon anime's title character is a time-traveling robot cat from the future, and the "dream matchup" was described in the Japanese press as a confrontation between America and Japan's robots. (The Terminator: Salvation film opened in Japan on June 13, 2009, two weeks before the promotional Doraemon cameo.)

Hopefully it's set during the future war. I'm bored of time travelling Terminator plots.

Salvation, despite not being a great film (still the best film after the first 2 though imo), was a step in the right direction for the franchise.

All this.

Salvation's commercial failure was, I think, influential in the belief that people just wanted more of what the first two/three had. The franchise hasn't escaped that mindset since.

The writer on this is young may bring a new vision to the series. On the other hand he's pretty inexperienced. We'll see what happens. It would be awesome to have a future war R rated animated series with Arnold providing the voice of the T-800.

This is actually probably the best direction to take the franchise at this point. There's clearly no direction for the live-action franchise, so they may as well try and shake things up a bit in a different medium. Not to mention, for the most part, Production IG are pretty great. If the writing is up to snuff, this could be very cool.

Yeah, I'm keeping expectations in check.

I honestly think a future war story won't be that interesting at this point.

But I'll take anything

The anime that accompanied Salvation was terrible. It was one of those cheap animes powered by a video game engine.

Not Anime. Just a web series that served as a prequel to that Terminator Salvation videogame.

Gotta have Schwarzenegger if they're making it about him.

Supernatural had a short anime series and they only got Jensen Ackles to voice the last two episodes while the rest were voiced by an imitator who sounded really bad. Just don't do this.
