Criterion One Night in Miami (2020) (The Criterion Collection) - 2021

Quote:
Amazon Studios is bringing three of its 2021 Oscar contenders to the Criterion Collection: Darius Marder’s “Sound of Metal,” Regina King’s “One Night in Miami,” and Garrett Bradley’s “Time.” The latter two will arrive on Criterion later this year, while “Sound of Metal” will bow in 2022.

That might be one of their best covers this decade. Definitely a day one.

Not fond of the cover myself, but I do love the movie and will be picking it up regardless (during a sale of course)

Criterion: "NEW 4K TRANSFER!"

*Releases only in HD*

Being a Netflix release, they could have kept it a 4K/Blu-ray combo.

Nice to see Regina King in the Criterion Collection. This is a solid flick with some good moments. Didn't quite live up to the hype for me but very impressive for a directorial debut.

Every 4K eligible title won't get a 4K release. We also don't even know if Amazon would license 4K reights to Criterion.

What I meant to say was that I don't understand why a studio like Amazon or Netflix would license a digital-only film to a studio for Blu-ray release, especially a studio that is boutique like Criterion, and NOT do a 4K or 4K/Blu-ray combo, especially when it's from a 4K master. Take Mank for example, I own an officially pressed FYC Blu-ray, and while the quality is better than streaming, it's not as good as the 4K streaming, which in turn is not the same as a 4K disc.

Like Amazon has Park-Chan Wook's The Handmaiden in 4K, but the Blu-ray release is only HD. I would love if they released it (or the extended version) in 4K through Criterion or some other respectable retailer.

Because people will tune into the service for the exclusive 4K stream.

This will be getting a release in the UK from Criterion as well. There's an angled pic that shows it will be a plastic case.

If Amazon does allow Criterion to do 4K releases of their films, my hope is the first film that gets the treatment is "The Handmaiden".

Svet coming in hot with that 2.5! Would never expect less from the man. He really has a "perspective" on things.

Not that one man's opinion matters, but for the sake of killing this running joke, can we please diversify who reviews these black-led Criterions?

Indeed. The review of the film reeks of someone who doesn't understand the significance of the events depicted and discussed in the film and also includes a glaring error:

Quote:
Regina King's film One Night in Miami... utilizes a very similar blueprint to reconstruct a legendary meeting that never happened.
Actually, it absolutely did happen. We just don't know what they talked about. The four men were friends and did spend that night in that hotel in Miami.

This latest 2.5 review shouldn’t be a surprise after all the others listed in the Menace II Society 4K thread:
