I think best height is to have your eye level between the middle and bottom of the screen.

My tv stand is about 3 ft up..higher than most Sony matching stands, but, I really like the heighth...

Its the Ikea Markor tv stand...great and very reasonably priced. ~$200

Middle of the set at eye level, and make sure the width is greater than the TV

I have one already that will fit for now thats about 3feet up, I used it for a 32 inch LCD before. Just was trying to see if one of 46 inches needed a shorter stand. Its solid oak and I paid a bundle and I'd hate not to be able to use it for the 46 incher.

Do you need the width greater than the TV for looks or another reason?

Stability.

Call me paranoid, but I've lived in Southern California all my life...

You could always buy the matching stand. It's been my experience that SonyStyle.com recommends specific stands for specific TV's. Check that first. Look at the dimensions to give yourself a ballpark idea.

If you have small children, be advised they WILL tear your receiver volume knob off and pour ketchup in your PS3.

If price isn't an issue, try www.salamanderdesigns.com.

You could always try it first then get a lower stand if you think it's too high. My stand is about 24" from floor to top of stand, then plasma on top. For me that works from my seating position.

Eye level at 1/3 up from the bottom of the screen works well for most.
