Default HP Displays

Anyone have any opinions on the HP displays? The 65" set that they have for $3500 is very tempting - providing they ever have lamps again.

Pretty decent overall.

Take some time to sift through this thread.

For the kind of money you're talking about, I think you can do better.

Part of the limiting factor is that there are still very few sets overall that can handle 1080p input. The HP is one that's seemed to deal with it well - unless it's the Xbox360 but it lists up front that there are issues with component and vga.

I just think the Sony A2000's are the best RP's at their price point, all things considered.

They do accept 1080p and they can be adjusted pretty damned well even before you get an ISF calibration job done.

Sony has their hits and misses, but they've hit a clear home run with LCOS/SXRD.

I really don't think the HP sets come close to these from what I've seen, demoed, and researched.

God forbid it happened, but if my XBR960 kicked the bucket today, I'd be saving up and getting an A2000 for myself without another consideration.

This is a DLP which uses wobulation to get 1080p. If you look at the specs, it says, "HP Visual Fidelity: Wobulation resolution enhancement". This was a stop gap between true 720p and true 1080p DLP. I would skip this and get a real 1080p DLP set - if that is what you are looking for.

I was watching Terminator 2 on a 1080p DLP, and I was seeing rainbows So make sure you preview a DLP to make sure you don't have the same problem. Once you see one, you will begin to see them all.

Thanks for the heads up on the wobulation; I remember that from last year. I haven't started in on the 300 page threaed at AVS to see more about it.

The search continues...

Chris,

If you tell me what your requirements are, I will recommend a TV for you to check out.

Basically, I want to get set for the next several years of viewing. HDMI 1.3 isn't a concern though. But it needs 1080p input. The Sony 60" XBR2 is looking pretty sweet in some of the places I've been looking.

The HP does half of the pixels every 120th of a second, allowing for a 1080p show to be delivered 60 times a second.
It looked awesome a year ago, but you can't go wrong with that 60" XBR2. It's gorgeous, plus the stand they have specially for it will fit most people's larger centre channels. I have a Paradigm CC-370 and most stands it will not fit in.

If you can handle the space, the best bang for the buck is going to be the Sony 60" SXRD XBR2. As far as rear projection TVs go, there is none better. For flat panels, the best thing out there is the $8,000 Pioneer 1080p Plasma (nearly wet myself when I saw it at Magnolia). If that isn't in your budget (I just can't justify spending that kind of money on a TV right now), then check out the Sony LCD XBR2/3. The XBR engine really gets the colors and response times very close to Plasma without the cost.

The more I read about the 60XBR2 the more I want it. The more it seems to fit in with what I need and want without any serious glitches to it yet.

Plus, the wife just bought a new car yesterday under my name. That gives me power. I still want that 73" Mitsubishi set but she's balking at the size. She did concede that after the car, she has less room to be upset about a 60". We're at a 50" LCD right now and she considers that just slightly too big.

Another vote for XBR2 here. I was at the Sony store on Fri, and saw the BDP-S1 running on the 70" XBR2. It was playing Knight's Tale and it looked amazing. My dad has the XBR1 50" and even that looks great, despite not accepting 1080p.

Aren't the a2000's newer than the XBR's you all are referring to?

The XBR2s are the newer model year (last year was the XBR). The big advantage is that you get better blacks and contrast with the XBR engine, as well as better SD imaging (for TV, of course).

Even though the a2000 is newer than the XBR1, I feel that the a2000 is a drop in quality compared to the XBR1. Now the XBR2 is a whole different animal.

When I first pulled the 60" a2000 out of the box, I expected to be blown away by the PQ, based on expectations for SXRD technology set by the XBR1. Unfortunately I wasn't. The display looked blurry and didn't offer as much detail than even the Samsung 61" DLP. I gave this the benefit of the doubt, and thought maybe it was just this particular unit, but when I pulled the 55" out of the box, it shared the same characteristics as the 60". Now due to returns/exchanges, other stores and what not, I have had the opportunity to view about 10 different a2000 sets ranging in size from 50"-60" and I believe that they can't hold a candle to the XBR SXRD sets.

It seems that Sony is attempting to bridge a definite gap between the a2000 sets and the XBR, which is acceptable given the price difference.

^^ Interesting info. You're not the first person I've read/heard simillar sentiments from.

Oh well. XBR is usually the top of the line from Sony anyways, so there ya go.
