Encounter of the Spooky Kind (Eureka Classics) Blu-ray - June 21st, 2021

ENCOUNTER OF THE SPOOKY KIND, the unique ground-breaking action-horror comedy from legendary director Sammo Hung, will be released on Blu-ray (a worldwide debut of this brand-new 2K restoration on home video) for the first time in the UK as part of the Eureka Classics range from 21 June 2021. The First Print Run of 2000 copies will feature a Limited-Edition O-card Slipcase, Collector’s Booklet and Reversible Poster.

A defining film in Hong Kong genre cinema, ENCOUNTER OF THE SPOOKY KIND blended kung fu, special effects, and Chinese folklore to invent a whole new sub-genre of Asian cinema, the Jiangshi film, which only a few years later would spawn the iconic and hugely successful MR. VAMPIRE.

Sammo Hung plays Courageous Cheung, a man well known in his local village for his lack of fear. His reputation is soon put to the test after he is tricked into spending the night in a temple full of spirits, zombies, and vampires!

Not content with delivering a bucket load of supernatural chills and thrills, Sammo also delivers some of the finest action choreography of his career. Eureka Classics is proud to present ENCOUNTER OF THE SPOOKY KIND on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK, from a brand new 2K restoration!

Amazing news! Eureka are really making a major boutique comeback at the moment. Arrow Video needs to up its game or 88 Films and Eureka will leave them in the dust.

Great news, despite me buying the Nova release last December One of my fave Sammo movies more for the laughs if anything!

I would have thought a release nearer Halloween would have been more appropriate though

I can't wait to see what's packed in with this release.

Actually, Encounter of the Spooky Kind is the correct title. Media Asia later retitled it EncounterS of the Spooky Kind.

Another great film by Sammo - had it for a long time on DVD boxset alongside Knockabout & Magnificent Butcher from Fortune Star. So glad that Eureka will release this classic movie on bluray

What do you mean? Eureka has always been on top of the game. I always find something interesting in their monthly releases, while Arrow has had a lot of disappointing months lately.

I've got more and more disappointed by Arrow in the last year or so. Which is strange as the cryptic sheet of upcoming releases and the postcards of stuff they haven't released should make 2021 a good year. But so far not convinced.

I’ll be ordering from Amazon as soon as it’s live (I have vouchers to use otherwise I’d order direct).


Hopefully Eureka don’t announce the print run amount if it’s a limited edition so they can get more out if it flies off the shelf like the Lucky Stars set did. Luckily I pre order all the JC/Sammo releases that 88 films & Eureka release (from Amazon usually to use up vouchers if I have them) so I got my copy but it’s a shame for those that missed out.

Was hoping this would be included in another "3 Films By Sammo Hung" set, preferably with The Prodigal Son so I could also upgrade my DVD of that as well, but I will still be pre-ordering this as soon as it's live.

I was thinking that too. I would have liked another triple with two Spookeys and one skinny tiger fatty dragon. This will do though.

Somebody needs to get working on Chow Yun fat movies. I have a few nova released but would be nice to see a uk brand pick then up.
