Hello,

Apologies as my french is very poor.

Are you saying that you have actually seen the the ESC editions bluray release.?

and the full length/extended version of the Alamo is in 4:3 rather than 16:9 it and looks like a simple copy of the old laserdisc with no attempt to upscale or correct.?

If so very frustrating as This is different to the comments made about the German release (I missed out on - agh).

Thanks in advance

French disc arrived yesterday. Theatrical version is offered with French dubbing or original English with burned in French subtitles,, Picture quality and sound (DTS 5.1 or DD Stereo on the English version) appears to be very good. No overture/entracte/exit music though.

The extended ("longue") version is on the extras disc, and, as already been said, is truly awful. I would say worse than the LD (which I have) or the VHS tape. It is pretty much unwatchable as presented - in its own small window in the middle of the screen, Zooming it out makes it even worse.

No-one is going to watch this version all the way through. What they could have done was to isolate the extra scenes (and the overture/entracte/exit, which it includes) and present them as extras.

So it's the Koch version for me (if I can ever get it delivered).

EDIT: The subtitles are not burned in. See posts below.

Default updated info for the post

Would be nice to see a capture of the French 1080p letterboxed 4:3 SD version.

If I calculate correctly the SD windowboxed 2.20? image then on 1080p 16:9 should end:

655p tall x 1440 pixels wide 2.20?

On the Koch disc apparently they used a 35mm Scope source for the HD transfer (see German thread),
so therefore they matted the Roadshow/Extended 2.20 SD image too to 2.35 so the images for both components would end with the same 2.35 height on the 720p disc,
so the image should be:

2.20 582p tall matted down to 545p tall x 1280 pixels wide 2.35

You're absolutely correct ! I'd never have guessed that. You do have to wait for the film to start, and my remote doesn't have a Subtitles button (I have to go into an Options menu), so it's not very elegant, but you can turn them off.

Thanks !

Well it's unavailable now & has been for a few weeks (Actuellement indisponible), that didn't take long (not even any copies on the Marketplace). So, it's quick sell-outs from Amazon Germany & France, I wonder what the story is there?

For those that don't know, Pictureville in Bradford UK are presenting The Alamo in SmileBox Digital as part of their Widescreen Weekend in September. The programme says length is 200 minutes, so probably the full roadshow version. It will be interesting to see what it's like, but it does raise (again) the tantalising possibility of a home digital release. https://www.scienceandmediamuseum.or...nema/wsw-alamo

In all fairness, the roadshow version was included on the German release a while back..

Yes, and of course in other versions e.g. Laserdisc. I have the German release and it is very good. It will be interesting to see how the SmileBox version compares. Irrespective of whether there is a home disc, it at least offers the possibility of viewing the full movie on a theatrical screen, something which hasn't been possible for many years.

The roadshow scenes were taken from the Laserdisc on the German Blu-ray. I thought that they'd look awful (but good to have them in there for completeness sake), but I was surprised just how good they looked, of course there was a drop-off in picture quality, but not massive, the average person wouldn't even notice (that's the sort of person who wouldn't visit this site).
