Blu-ray Samurai

![]() ![]() ![]() Soul Blu-ray ![]() Soul Blu-ray ![]() Soul on Blu-ray clocks in at a somewhat measly 24.15 mbps bitrate. The additional space on the BD-50 goes to Disney's usual localization of showing parts of the video with text (such as credits) in different languages (on the Canadian disc, just English and French), but also to some of the special features. Meanwhile, the remaining bonus content is included on a separate disc, but uses under 14 GB on the BD-25. They could have put all the special features on the bonus disc, and maximized the video bitrate of the feature on the feature disc. (In the Canadian package, the discs are stacked. My bonus disc got some small but still unnecessary and annoying scratches against the included DVD as a result.) The official review calls the video presentation "perfect" but then notes that it has banding, quantifying it as "one or two mild appearances," and yet less than ideal compression issues can be noticed on four of the screenshots, so the banding is probably more prevalent than the reviewer noticed. The review then goes on to note that the releases's "plenty of extras spread across two discs support top-flight video and audio presentations," except the video presentation is certainly not "top-flight," since they didn't put all the bonus features on the second disc (except the audio commentary) and maximize the video bitrate of the feature, to avoid banding and other compression artifacts. It will be enjoyable for most, and for the most part it's certainly excellent, just don't call something "perfect" if it really isn't. (Was surprised that after search, there was a 4K thread and a movie thread, but no Blu-ray thread, that's why I created this one!) |
