I've been waiting so long for this underrated movie to get the Blu-ray treatment it most definitely deserves. I watched it countless times as a kid on VHS, then DVD up until now. One of my all-time favorite movies. Excitedly happy is an understatement. Evolution is not only being released on Blu-ray, but a Steelbook?? This is a great year for 20th Anniversary's. First Rat Race and now Evolution. "I think we've established that "ca-caw, ca-caw" and "tookie-tookie" don't work."
The image impression of "Evolution" is initially dominated by the strong coloring of the 1.85: 1 image, which goes very well with the colorful design of the various alien creatures. The sharpness is no less than impressive, especially in the close-ups. The structure of the skin, hairs, pores, as well as details and wrinkles on items of clothing can be clearly identified.
Bright landscape shots (e.g. in the Arizona desert) also impress with their very good depth of field. Only in darker scenes, as well as in interiors, does this impression diminish noticeably, which may also be related to the black value, which seems a little too bright and swallows a few details in the dark.
Otherwise, however, the crisp contrast also leads to an overall very good image impression, in which only the constantly present film grain is noticeable, which is a little more noticeable, especially in darker scenes.

The sound of "Evolution" does not lack a spatial listening experience. Especially in the action scenes, both the subwoofer and the back speakers come into play with a crash and are precisely controlled. But it is also nice that small directional effects are incorporated into quieter scenes, e.g. when alien insects hum around the protagonists (and the audience) in one scene. While John Powell's music is pleasantly distributed in the room, the acoustic events could use a little more pressure in some of the quieter scenes. The dialogues, especially in acoustically complex action sequences, also sound a little too quiet from the center. This is better controlled with the English soundtrack; here also the acoustic carpet has more pressure in quieter scenes.
Nevertheless, an overall nice, spatial listening experience. When the meteorite crashes into the desert at the beginning and everything is acoustically flying around the audience's ears, then it's just fun.
The really successful German dubbing should also be mentioned at this point, which makes some of the flatter jokes still worthy of approval due to its good-looking speakers and good timing.
And the deleted scenes are in HD, which surprised me for a movie from 20 years ago. I'd expected letterbox SD quality
