Reach the Rock has incredibly never even had a DVD release. Interesting film with a gorgeous post-rock score. Never even played in more than a dozen theatres during its 1998 release. Available from the library app Hoopla.

To be perfectly honest, I had never heard of it until I started making this thread. It sounds interesting though! I have to get a new library card, maybe I'll watch it then!

Chris Columbus discusses being offered this and Home Alone simultaneously in 1989 on the DVD commentary

I wonder if it would've become bigger if he'd taken it, considering he already had some recognition.

I wish there was a compendium of his National Lampoon pieces. He wasn’t just a great writer-he also illustrated some of them. I remember his insane “Workplace Guide to Sexual Harassment” layout.

Editor Paul Hirsch published a great autobiography recently about his career working on films like Star Wars, many of Brian De Palma’s films, and two of Hughes‘ films. Some great insights into an insanely talented, but very mercurial and inscrutable man who had a tendency to drop professional relationships for no just cause.

Pretty in Pink:****
Some Kind of Wonderful:****1/2
The Great Outdoors:***1/2
Christmas Vacation:****
Home Alone:****

Everything after Home Alone 2 is just bad.

Home Alone 3 is a talent starved movie.

You should put "writer" and "producer" in the same category as he also produced many of those films you listed under "writer". That's what makes a lot of them so great. He didn't just hand off a script; he was also deeply involved in the production and was oftentimes a "boss" to the director of those films.

Bacon was in a few of these kind of movies at the time and I can't remember which is which.

I was really hoping for The Breakfast Club UHD BD last year given that was the 35th ann. I hope we don't have to wait until the 40th ann.
