Just wait for the official announcement of Woolworths, at the moment, the source is "a store manager at a local Woolworths"...

We will just continue to see more and more of these types of reports as the weeks progress. Everyone sees things clearly except HD-DVD backers. It just further illustrates how much the HD-DVD camp is screwing it's consumers for leading them on to believe there's any chance their format can survive.

I highly doubt your going to get "official announcements" about things like these now.

Store Managers talk Regional Managers who talk to district who talk to Corporate. So they should know what's going on. If they mis-speak to the press then Corporate will put out a press release. Otherwise it's not in their best interest to crap on a supplier to the press if they can help it. Same goes for Circuit City.

Like when Microsoft announced K-mart would go HD-DVD exclusive after Target went BD hardware exclusive. We only got the K-Mart PR saying it was completely BS, not the Target one since they didn't need to correct Sony's announcement.

whilst good news, Woolworths dropping HD DVD is akin to PC world dropping the sale of T-shirts.
Their selection, promotion and display of either format was pathetic, mixed together and with DVD on a few random shelves at any woolworths I've been in (I was looking for call of duty 4 during the first week... I held my nose and went everywhere)

I agree i think what is sometimes getting lost in this is the HD DVD owners that don't realize they are dumping money into a soon to be dead technology. I realize that makes them an uninformed consumer, but nonetheless it's not right. Now for those people who know and still maintain it will overtake blu-ray...then I have no sympathy for them.

I know the UK stores aren't quite like the US stores were (for one thing, they're still open), but if it was anything like what I remember of the movie/music/video game selection of the US stores, docjan_uk is probably right -- the american equivalent would be Meijer going Blu-Ray exclusive.

Though, I do rather miss the Woolworth's stores. I guess it's purely because it was a big part of my childhood. Sad that a store that old can die like that. Theoretically, you'd think they'd be able to make a successful transition to compete with the Wal-Marts... oh well.

There aren't. The Woolworth's of the UK broke from the US parent company in 1982 and formed a separate company.

The US company survives today as Foot Locker, Inc.

The decision was made by Woolworths execs after Blu-Ray discs outsold HD-DVD by ten-to-one at the chain over Christmas.

This is possibly bigger than if one of the specialist shops went exclusive. Woolworths have a far broader spectrum of customers than HMV and the like, and while they have a smaller range of material, they sell a huge amount of chart titles.

If nothing else it sends a message to non enthusiasts, who may be on the fence as to which way to go.
