I imagine 2023 things will start to slow down for new PS4 games if PS5 can get the ball finally rolling with a regular flow of new PS5 specific games each month from AAA developers again, as well as higher quality/length smaller studio games made specifically for PS5.
2022 will still be getting cross gen games even from Sony. Plus more PS5s need to be produced to oversaturate the market so the resellers don't feel the need to hoard every console sold. As of now, PS4 is still the leading console. |

at least 3 more years, most likely 5
Sony might drop the ps4 after the upcoming batch of exclusives (GT7, H2, GoW) but indies, EA, Ubisoft, Bandai Namco, etc.. won’t drop the ps4 anytime soon. it’s also more powerful than the switch, so if the switch kept getting smaller games and old remasters, they might as well port these games for the ps4 as well |

Yeah, from a business stand point, if most people don't have a PS5 compared to all those with PS4s, much like Rockstar's milking of GTAV Online being longer than normal, the PS4 will have a longer lifespan of new games years past it's 7 year expected cycle.
For PS4, November 2013 to easily November 2023 before new PS4 games start slowing down as developers focus more on the true power of the PS5... |

I would guess 5% own PS5s compared to 95% owning PS4s. Definitely worth extending the lifespan of the PS4 for at this point. The resellers with 5 or more consoles each and selling for $800 and up pretty much helped ruined any big momentum of the PS5.
PS4 Pro is comparable to PS5 at this early point, IMO. |

There's only been a handful of PS5 exclusive games so far. Almost every game released on the PS5 has also had a PS4 release.

It's possible the PS4 library will continue until 2028 the way things are going with the slow home infiltration of the PS5. Hopefully by 2030, PS5 will begin to generate new PS5 exclusive games.
![]() No, but this is probably the slowest major console generation start in history considering the pandemic affecting progress. Effect, the result after something happens. Cause and effect. Side effects. Affect, influenced or changed by something. |

So if prospective PS4 Pro owners had been told the machine would be supported for about 6 years and no more, would that have changed their purchase? Great the base PS4 will have had a 9+ year lifespan, but no-one anticipated the mid-gen refresh.

That's probably true.
It's possible Sony could change their mind and release PS4 version for most of their PS5 exclusive games down the road, if sales don't pick up faster for the PS5. They won't load as fast and not be 4K, unless it's the PS4 Pro version which is closer to the PS5 in resolution anyway. |

It looks like there was a PS3 game released last year. And at least some support for PS3 games going into late 2018, so I think PS4 will get games however minor for another 4 years.
Luckily the PS5 is selling like hotcakes, much more quickly than PS4 in year one across the globe so hopefully support can end a little sooner. It’s just been hard for Sony in being able to make enough of the buggers to meet the demand with pandemic helping out online shopping and scalping nicely… More and more people are joining the party though. |

Other than games that need to take advantage of the PS5 hardware, I don't know why PS4 games can't go on indefinitely. A lot of indie games and classic compilations could come out on PS4 and be BC with PS5. Still get PS4 players like me that probably won't buy a PS5 until it's a slim model. I don't play as many AAA games as I used too. A lot of it is the same old same old.

While Im not 100% sure.I think ps4 at this point in its life is getting more new releases than ps3 had at this point in its life. Also I think at this point in the ps5 life it has less releases than the ps4 had at that point.

PS4 has about 110 million consoles in gamers' homes.
PS5 has probably 5 million consoles in gamers' homes. The other half being in resellers' price gouging hands. Quote:
So imagine being a AAA developer, and wanting to release your new game that cost $10+ million to complete. It would be a wise business decision to tether the game with development on a PS4 first, and then upgrade it with 4K 60 fps for a PS5 with little more effort than that unfortunately as we're seeing most times. 110 million gamers vs 5 million. With that in mind, PS4 might continue with a new library of games well into 2025. |

Weekly PS4 traffic on this site has died down quite a bit in the last several months though so there's that.
