For any extras freaks like me, the Canadian release has a few exclusive commentaries and is region free, and based on Raven Banner’s site it appears to ship to the UK.

Jeez and I thought the extras here were pretty generous for a new release.

May I ask, as I’m genuinely interested - why do you bother about extras so much? Do you just like knowing you have the release with the most complete extras collection, or do you watch every single extra? It’s not something I’ve ever really bothered about as I don’t watch them, but I know for some people they’re the best part of a release.

Depends on if you care about the commentaries, (I don't), as it's actually missing stuff that's on the US/UK release.

Oh and is nearly double the price.

I watch every single extra and it drives me nuts. But I find watching films indivisible from also learning about how they’re made. Knowing how something is done fosters a deeper engagement for me, and also leads to watching other films based on what’s referenced in the extras. If titles didn’t have extras I’d just stream them and that’s less fun.

Really the most important thing for me is value for money. £15 for a single film and nothing else just makes no sense to me. I’ve made my peace with barebones rather than outright rejecting it like before - when a disc is a couple of quid you really don’t need lots of extras, some titles are streaming originals like these Shudder titles so I’m just happy to see them on disc extras or otherwise, and there are titles like for example The Cheviot the Stag and the Black Black Oil where you can’t find it on VOD or even pirate it easily. I think the HD master for Soft Top Hard Shoulder or The Thing from Another World has only ever been released on disc, at least in the UK.

Also with 4K discs image is more important than extras, but would I take a Blu-ray without extras over a digital UHD?

I would also say part of it is a form of self control so I don’t attempt to buy every disc ever released. It’s a way to save shelf space and I’m fine with never seeing some films except as streams and DCPs, because it is a transitory medium.

I’m always happy when something gets a UK release as it allows bigger exposure, not everyone has the money and knowledge to import everything. But I think it’s important to make informed decisions and know the alternatives out there. To try out the film get the UK release but if it’s one of your favourites import. But I know if I bought the UK disc then saw something better was available on DVDCompare I would feel annoyed and upset and like I wasted my money.

But sometimes UK extras aren’t necessarily better but are different, and that saves on an import.
