Default Flux Gourmet (Peter Strickland)

Quote:
Synopsis: A sonic collective who can’t decide on a name takes up a residency at an institute devoted to culinary and alimentary performance. The members Elle di Elle, Billy Rubin and Lamina Propria are caught up in their own power struggles, only their dysfunctional dynamic is furthermore exacerbated when they have to answer to the institute’s head, Jan Stevens. With the various rivalries unfolding, Stones, the Institute’s ‘dossierge’ has to privately endure increasingly fraught stomach problems whilst documenting the collective’s activities.

I caught this at a film festival over the weekend.

While it doesn't reach the heights of the best moments of In Fabric (the only other film of his I've seen to this date) its still a Strickland movie, which means its quite.. weird. Strickland was once part of a music collective of his own, so I wonder how much of the material in this film is drawn from his life experience.

This film plays like a "Spinal Tap" for the art-house crowd, complete with "Stonehenge" moments, band member bickering, and shifting allegiances. Also, expect bodily functions/odors to be discussed in detail (and sometimes shown). One scene prompted a walk-out from a couple seated next to me, though it could be either from disgust or they could not vibe with the film by that point.

At least three actors from In Fabric are given more prominent roles here. Fatma Mohamed (Elle), Gwendoline Christie (Jan), and Richard Bremmer (Dr. Glock). All three are are putting in memorable work here. Mohamed, in particular, was a revelation to me as the firey-tempered leader of the music collective. I can see her becoming among my favorite actresses with more lead roles. I already knew Christie can be great and her Jan can be as shrewd and pathetic as Mohamed's Elle. Bremmer's face expresses so much it made his lines land even funnier because of it.

The only complaint I could level against the movie is that I wish there was more performance art from the fictional group at the center of the story. Those are the most dynamic moments, particularly in sound design (if you've seen Ben Wheatley's In The Earth then you might get an idea of what to prepare for).

So while it didn't grab me immediately as In Fabric, with a repeated viewing or two I can come to appreciate it more. Hopefully the distributor (IFC Midnight) can deliver a proper blu-ray and not a BD-R like how A24 handled In Fabric here in the States.

Available on VOD right now. Gave it a spin and quite enjoyed it; Definitely felt a little more scattershot than Duke of Burgundy and In Fabric but there's still plenty of delights to be found in it. Strickland is operating at such a strange level: He's like what would happen if you threw Argento, Lanthimos and John Waters into a blender. Wouldn't have him be any other way.

I enjoyed that, absurdly funny in places. Sound design is very impressive as are the visuals. New drinking game: take a shot every time you hear the word flanger
