Alvarez’s take is being kept deep inside the studio’s chest, but sources describe it as unconnected to the previous movies.

According to sources, Alvarez is a rabid fan of the franchise and casually pitched a take to Scott many years ago. The idea remained implanted in Scott’s brain until late last year when he called Alvarez out of the blue and asked him if the younger filmmaker was still up for it. Alvarez didn’t have to be asked twice.

20th Century picked up the project “purely off the strength of Fede’s pitch,” said division president Steve Asbell. “It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.”

Asbell, who recently spoke to THR about the future of 20th Century Studios, said by doing the project for Hulu, there wouldn’t be the pressure to whittle down the potential edginess that could come with theatrical considerations. “It’s not a film that has to be all things to all people with those gargantuan budgets. They get to be authentically what they are. And this is closer to its genre roots.”


Alvarez is certainly a filmmaker who loves his genre work. He has gained a following for his unsparing horror projects, including writing and directing a 2013 remake of Evil Dead and co-writing and producing Netflix’s remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. He found commercial and critical success with the thriller Don’t Breathe, a story he co-wrote and directed. Breathe engendered a sequel that was released in 2021.

Prequel/Ridley Scott haters must be overjoyed. Congratulations.

I haven't liked either Fede Alvarez film I've seen so far but, for the sake of the franchise, I'll root for him to deliver.

I'm always up for more Alien, although i really would like to see the prequels wrapped up at least.

They should definitely finish the prequel franchise. I still lament they killed off

doing his shenanigans that I want to see where it goes.

I still like Fede Alvarez’s directing a lot though. His directing for The Girl in the Spider’s Web was pretty great, and I quite enjoyed both Evil Dead and Don’t Breath. I think he has a lot of potential for this. And it might help it’s not a big studio film anymore so there’s less riding on it. VFX have also come such a long way for streaming that I think they can pull it off with the right ideas.

Big fan of both Don't Breathe and Evil Dead. If Scott himself liked Alvarez' idea enough to give him the greenlight years later, I have to assume it'll be great.

I also wonder if Ridley Scott has moved on from the alien saga. Maybe he has more he wants to do with his twilight years than make alien films for people on the internet to complain about? I certainly would.

That game was so damn tense. Shame they never made a sequel to it. The recreation of the Alien world was quite outstanding, and of course I loved the more survival horror approach.

This feels to me like he is passing the torch on Alien to a younger generation.

If Alvarez can combine the tension of Don't Breathe with the style of Girl in the Spider's Web & the gore of his Evil Dead, it could be a winner.

I imagine a lower budget means going back to the single location, haunted house horror of the first film. Hope so. The Xenomorph hasn't been scary for quite a few decades now.
