I know everyone always says they want a DC of this whenever a new edition is announced, but beyond a new pass on the effects I don't think there's that much Shatner can do, since a lot was abandoned before it was shot when they saw the state of those rock monsters.

If only they'd shot it as intended anyway before cutting them out! They'd be able to replace them with CG now.

But they did shoot the entire Rockman sequence as intended! The expanded Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack has the expanded score of the rock man sequence which he composed while watching the rough cut. It is far longer than the score that is in the finished film when they cut out the vast majority of the Rockman footage and overlaid the godhead effect. On the soundtrack the two tracks are called "Let's get out of here" part 1 and 2.

But it's over. There's never going to be a director's cut or even an Extended Cut and that is that. But it's going to look beautiful in 4k as is.

They did?! Lord only knows where I'd got the assumption they abandoned it. I'd thought the surviving footage of the creatures was test footage.

So yes, no excuse then, Paramount!

EDIT. I looked it up on Memory Alpha, and it seems I was sort of right, but got the whole confused. So most was dropped before the creatures were created, and the single scene shot was cut. That footage on the Blu-ray is test footage, not the intended scene.

In the original script, Kirk was attacked by ten large "rockmen" emerging from the rock faces of Sha Ka Ree. Unfortunately, with an extremely limited budget (which was responsible for other "high budget" items being removed from the final script, as well as for the use of cheaper effects for the space scenes), only one animatronic "Rock Man", portrayed by stuntman Tom Morga, was created. The single rockman was filmed attacking Kirk, but the scene was thought too poor to include in the film, although an extremely brief (a few frames) glimpse of the creature occurs in the final print during the scene where "God" fires energy blasts at Captain Kirk. Some test footage of the creature is available in the Special Edition two-disc DVD release.

The fact it's not in the deleted scenes is probably the reason I'd taken the truth and confused it in my mind to the belief they never shot it at all.

I still want to see all the deleted scenes for Nemesis as well. I don't get why they only give some but not all, and like many who always ask for the DC of V, I always say I want a "cast cut" of Nemesis so all the character stuff that Baird removed is put back. Another thing that's unlikely to ever happen. They're never going to be great films, but Paramount seems dead against any improvement to them.

They were filming at night and they thought that between the dark and whatever they could do in post-production would make the footage usable. The creature was supposed to breathe fire so that could easily be added with CGI and they could overlay or enhance the Practical suit with CGI. I'm actually curious to know how much that would cost for a couple of minutes of CGI. Whatever the cost Paramount was never willing to Shell it out.

It seems like the reason besides it being the least liked movie was they seem to not like shatner I could be wrong but I kinda get that feeling.
