Default Keep running the PS3 fan.

Just a suggestion. After watching a movie or playing a game, leave the sytem running for around 5 minutes or until the fan noise kicks lower. That may the parts stay nice and cool and leave your unit running good.

how would that retain performance? if you turn off the system, it will obviously no longer be powered and will cool down. so what the heck does it matter?

Well I could be wrong on this. But the fan has different speeds, when your using the cpu pretty good when playing a game or movie, the fan kicks on high. But after the movie I watch I noticed it was still on high. So I wanted it to keep running at the high speed to not let the cpu chips get any hotter if I simply turned the unit off in which the fan stops completely.

Yea, but if you take off the Ps3, CPU will cool off anyway right? I mean its now been supplied any power, thus it will cool. Plus that theory won't work in all cases. Such as if you're playing games or watching movies in a very warm room. If you decide to apply that theory, the PS3's fan will be blowing warm to hot air. But if you take off the system, the CPU and all the other components will cool faster and more effectively.

That's my two cents.

Pretty darned quiet. Almost unoticeable outright.

The Xbox360 is very loud in contrast.

I had my PS3 on for pretty much most of the day yesterday, nonstop, and gamed and watched movies without any problems or cooling issues.

You can feel some heat coming from the unit in fairly short order but it never goes past that initial level and is well under control.

I could hear my fan pretty good when I started up Last stand movie disc. but with the movie volume I couldn't hear it. Don't have a 360 so nothing to compare too. It doesn't bother me.

You can hear the fan if you are listening out for it and the room is quiet. If there is any talking or tv audio then you can't hear it.

The X360 fan sounds like a turbo jet.

Doesn't the Xbox 360's have an outlet power cord the size of a brick?
I agree about the fan, it is a bit loud.

Played more of Marvel UA. The fan seems to stay on low there. Must be low CPU usage. When I watched Last Stand it kicks on high. Guess AVC is cpu hungry.

Well, it's been a year since I've seen it (as I don't go looking at my cords everyday)....but I recall it is rather large. Not sure what that has to do with anything though?

Nothing, but yes, the damned thing is a brick.

This is flawed logic. If the CPU is hot....it will cool off faster with the fan on than if you just turn the system off. Remember that the fan is blowing hot air out of the unit. If you power off your unit, the hot air will not be able to escape the unit as effectively. This same reason is why people by UPSs for thier rear projection TVs, if you lose power....the lamp is unable to cool effectively because the fan cannot turn on.

That being said....I don't think it is necessary to consciously leave your PS3 on after playing a game of watching a movie in order to cool it down. I'm sure it is designed to be turned off without any harmful effects.
