Hi, i'm about to purchase the GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) card, but i'm unsure about this issue.
I've read several reviews all claiming this: "With an embedded revolutionary HDTV encoder, the 8800 series also supports crystal clear HDTV output up to 1080i" So my understanding is that this card will encode blue-ray discs only up to 1080i but not 1080p? My retailer "thinks" it will encode in 1080p, but is not sure about this matter. Hard to believe it won't encode in the standard blue-ray resolution. Could someone enlighten me please? It would be nice if someone with this card could confirm 1080p with Blue-Ray discs. Thanks. |

This is from the Nvidia website directly,
NVIDIA PureVideo HD technology delivers outstanding picture clarity, ultra-smooth video, vivid color, and precise image scaling for video and HD DVD and Blu-ray movies. PureVideo HD accelerates and enhances high-definition movies delivering life-like images that have up to six times the detail of standard DVD movies at resolutions up to 1080p - the highest HD resolution available. I have heard that there are issues with cpu usuage when decoding hd sources, but that is supposed to have been cleared up with recent models of the 8800 series. They previously did not use the Pure Video technology. You may want to check to see if this has been sitting on a shelf for a while or was recently rec'd by the retailer. |

I have the 8800GT and that outputs at 1080p and above if your monitor/tv supports it. I imagine the 8800GTX which is better than mine would do the same if not better.

If your going to spend that much on a video card, I would wait for the 9800GX2 that is coming out soon. Or spend a little less on an 8800GTS 512MB card that is almost the same performance as the GTX, but cheaper.
I think the older GTS cards and the GTX card are pointless to buy now as you don't get the best performance per dollar. |

The 8800 GTX / Ultra isn't a good purchase idea if your primary desire is for BD playback.
It doesn't have the nicer and improved AVC hardware assist decode stuff. The mid-ranges, however do. Or you can wait for the 8800gx2 (fixed the model number, got confused with a different generation :P) which should have the improved hardware assist. If you're primary concern is games though, go for the 8800 ![]() [ add / edit ] Point of Clarity : by model, they mean 8800 gt/gtx/gtx ultra, etc. Not it's been on the shelf so long. If it has a certain number [8800 gtx / ultra] it is that chipset, it will not have the avc assist. 8600 does have the AVC assist. As does the 8300 I believe [check some hardware review sites ot verify that]. The 8800 GTS -should- as well support PureVideo 2. Last edited by reiella; 02-08-2008 at 04:09 PM. |
