The 1998 surrealist psychological thriller stars Sean Gullette as a mathematician who becomes obsessed with searching for patterns in the universe as part of a quest for meaning. Twenty-five years later, Darren Aronofsky honored Pi's 25th anniversary with an 8K restoration for IMAX re-release on March 14, 2023. The film will be available digitally and on Blu-ray later this year.

The indie film’s razor thin budget only allowed for a four day mix back in 1998, and as a result, Craig had his work cut out for him as he reconstructed and rebuilt the original soundtrack into its stunning new remaster and Dolby Atmos® mix.

I remember not really enjoying this when I watched it many many years ago but maybe I should give it another shot since I typically enjoy Aronofsky...

All for it.

Although, I do find all that work going into an 8K 1 day theatrical release, to then release it on Blu-ray to be an absolute waste of the resources availible.

One of the earliest DVD I still own. Crazy to think.

About damn time. Interesting that this is coming from A24. This seemed like something Criterion would get. I guess this is the first time they’ve licensed a film they didn’t own. It makes sense since Aronofsky’s last film was for them. This probably also means Lionsgate lost the rights.

I just hope the packaging isn't something awful like the Midsommar release.

I too will be able to retire my few decades old dvd copy.

I like the new 25th anniversary pi poster, but it is very busy, much busier than the original aesthetic. I get why people don’t care for it.

Did a24 buy the distribution rights or did Aronofsky go to them or get the best deal from them?

Hope its a 4K or it gets one somewhere else, otherwise what would be the point of such a huge restoration

Fairly certain when they say "Blu-ray" they mean in general. There's no way it's going to be one format.

I think it's funny that a film shot on 16mm reversal stock is getting an "8K restoration" and an IMAX re-release.

Recall Lionsgate currently has a deal with A24 to distribute their films on home video. This release likely has to do with their current partnership all things considered. It's also possible they grabbed the rights up first pick if they were indeed lost, again probably due in part to their working relationship.

It must be the same logic behind acquiring Stop Making Sense and also Instinct. Curious if they will pick up any other earlier titles.
