Paramount Vertigo Remake - Starring Robert Downey Jr.

Source: Deadline

Quote:
Paramount Sets Remake Of Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’ As Potential Robert Downey Jr-Starrer; Steven Knight To Write Script & Davis Entertainment To Produce With Team Downey
Mike Fleming Jr. - March 23, 2023

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures has preemptively acquired a remake of the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock-directed psychological thriller Vertigo, with Robert Downey Jr eyeing the James Stewart lead role of the former police detective forced to retire after a line of duty trauma that leaves him with fear of heights and vertigo. The script will be written by Steven Knight, the See and Peaky Blinders creator who just signed on to write a Star Wars film.

Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox are producing with Team Downey’s Robert and Susan Downey.

Paramount was the home for the original film, and the Hitchcock Estate favored the studio as the landing spot for this. The original was scripted by Alec Coppel and Samuel A. Taylor from the Boileau-Narcejac novel D’entre les morts (From Among the Dead).

After he’s shelved by his affliction, the police detective is hired by an acquaintance to shadow his wife, who he feels is behaving erratically. The film was the first to use the dolly zoom, an in-camera device that distorts perspective to create disorientation and pull audiences into the cop’s acrophobia condition.

Team Downey has Perry Mason in Season Two on HBO, and Downey is starring in the Park Chan-wook-directed The Sympathizer for A24 and HBO. Davis Entertainment is in post on Harold and the Purple Crayon and Uglies.

Downey is repped by WME, Joy Fehily and Hansen Jacobson; Knight is CAA and Nelson Davis.

Remakes can't hurt you. You can pretend they're not real if you like.

I'm actually intrigued by a modern version of this. Vertigo is sometimes my favourite movie of all. And at other times I don't think it's even Hitch's best or second best film.

The story is absolutely ludicrous, even just in its premise of Scottie behind hired to follow a not so firm friend's wife around, and him taking the job. So it will be interesting to see how they approach that.

Steven Knight did a great job writing an adaptation, remake if you like, of A Christmas Carol. With Scrooge a bit of a darkly eccentric weirdo. Almost like a potential serial killer, as much as he is a miser.

So maybe that bodes well.

It won't be a Hitchcock tribute act that's for sure.

Where's the same anger from people over "All Quiet On The Western Front?" Well-loved by many, won 4 Oscars, also a remake, also vastly inferior to the 1930 Original.

Can't pick and choose which remakes get outrage.

Vertigo is a bonafide classic, but what harm can a modern version do, if they manage to get the right director attached to it?

John Boy Walton's attempt at a German accent was a disgrace.

Can't really get excited or appalled by the news without a director attached.

No. VERTIGO is a classic and one of my favorite films. I have no interest in a remake, especially with Robert Downey Jr. involved. You can't top James Stewart's performance.

I remember how the idea of a remake for Beauty and the Beast was ludicrous to me, and made me upset because I thought back then that a critically acclaimed live action film that stood the test of time would never get that treatment. Since then we had West Side Story, Paramount plans this and WB plans to do The Wizard of Oz, so the Disney classics are not alone anymore. At least they'll never remake Gone with the Wind.

I love how people voice the strongest opposition to films being made which they know they have no desire to and aren't going to watch them.

Strange behavior. Almost like grandstanding some sort of agenda, counter-agenda, or just a populist dipshit "critique".
