Default Survival horror having ammo drops and cocky heroes, killed the genre...

This is just my opinion. You don't have to agree.

Anyway, older horror games were just scarier overall. I also miss the eerie music. That always provided ambiance. Now as you explore the RPD or whatever, where's the chilling piano sounds?

These days, horror games hardly quality as horror. In fact, I think Capcom doesn't care about horror any more, since CV wasn't remade. That's dumb, because it's a mainline entry that came before RE4.

Everything you kill in new games besides some indie games, drops cash or bullets. I'm specifically aiming my criticism at RE4, 5 and all that. I know The Evil Within has that stuff in it too, but that's still an incredibly hard and atmospheric game. Even when you upgrade your guns, it's hard to kill everything in your path.

Another problem is that they keep using the same characters. From a story standpoint, people like to see familiar faces. The only downside there, is that Leon, Chris, Jill, and whatnot, cannot really feel creeped out anymore. In fact, Leon Kennedy's wisecracks in his recent appearances in the computer animated movies are barely reminiscent of when you played him in RE2. Back then, the dude was just a rookie cop, caught up in a conspiracy involving a zombies infested landscape. But since they keep using him, he is now video gaming's equivalent to Keanu Reeves or Bruce Willis.

What do you think? Do you think survival horror is dead?

I wouldn't say it's dead, dead. But the genre certainly changed because of RE4 making it more about action. After all, villagers drop ammo, but they aren't even in possession of guns.
