Default Panny, Are you listening?

Panny, Are you listening?

Dear Panasonic,

I am 90% happy with your DMP BD30 player. However I have 2 criticisms that would make it perfect for many of us.

In order of importance to me:
1) The power button and the tray open button are opposed to their logical position. Directly above the tray is the power button. on the other side of the player is the tray open button. Am I the only person to think that this is counter-intuitive? I don't think so. I can't tell you how many times I've attempted to open the tray, only to have the unit power off. This is MOST frustrating.

2) The width of the player is more than the standard for stereo/video equipment. This makes my setup look off balanced. Please put future players on a diet.

Panasonic,,,, I truly love my Blu-ray Player, and I am very happy that I've invested in it. I know that this player is not the final unit that you will put to market, so my criticisms are to help you develop a player that the masses can use and be happy with. I only wish that my next Panasonic Blu-ray player will be the best.

Others here,,, am I right, or am I blowing smoke from some orifice that shouldn't be mentioned? My asbestos underwear is in place and ready for flames.

You're talking about ergonomics, which you have every right to do. I see no problem with it.

I've noticed that early generation AV equipment is usually a bit clunky in the way it's built - they basically put a skin on their original lab design, for speeding it to market. I bet they're getting lots of comments like yours, and the more, the better.

The power button is on the left side. When is the last time you ever saw a component (other than gaming consoles) with the power button on the right side? I work in electronics and I can't recall a single one.

Most players are black with black buttons that are hard to distinguish in low light.
My solution:
I used a standard single-hole office punch to punch out a small circle from a roll of 3M red reflective tape. I then used a pair of tweezers to line up the tape circle on the eject button ... problem solved!

My 5 remotes are all "parked", I use the Harmony 676 ... but I still need to manually insert the disc to play a movie unless you have figured out how the remote can do it ... smartass

One man's perfection is anothers flawed product.

Both the placement of the power button on the left and the unit width at 16-15/16" are correct for this type of consumer product.

Maybe the other components you have do not meet these standards for consumer audio products.

IMHO, Panny's user features are well designed and they should not change anything.

I would recommend to many to never use the buttons on the actual machine, when there is a remote control available. Especially in cold climates in the winter when the dry heated air in your home makes static electricity a problem. Earlier this winter, I simply picked the remote control off of the top of one of my players. The static electricity discharge was transmitted to the connected AVR which went immediately into protect mode, but not soon enough to prevent damage to the autocalibrate function and its ability to detect appropriately connected speakers, for some reason. I had to send it for repairs. After that incident, the only physical contact I make with any of the AV equipment is to put disks in and take them out, and I make sure to discharge myself beforehand.

Not directly related to the original post, but useful information, I think.

I use the remote for everything.
Yes, my Harmony 880 has all of the features I need.

The only real issue with this player is the LFE bug when playing PCM tracks.
The LFE output is low by 5dB. (only via HDMI, analog outs is ok)
Other than that, this player kicks a$$.

My biggest irritation is the slow power-on, open tray time. I can accept a few seconds, but I really want that tray open almost instantaneously.

I haven't updated the fw yet, perhaps that has been fixed...

I think Panny would do better to correct the LFE bug over HDMI, assuming they haven't already fixed this. I am looking at this player's new sibling coming out soon, and I can put up with aesthetic and ergonomic issues, but if they still haven't fixed the LFE bug, I will likely just stick with my PS3.

I actually appreciate the fact the eject button is on the opposite side from the DVD tray. This way my hand never gets near the opening/closing tray. This works especially good for me since my Panny sites on a shelf above my TV. Therefore, I'm reaching up and the ergonomics of the Panny layout keep my hands away from the open tray.

I do, however, wish it wasn't as wide as it is.

Well said.
I am not sure what they are using that are not around this size. Standard is 16-17in. All my Pioneer stuff is 16 9/16.

im really missing old panny vcr design, such as nv20/25 'super drive' with jog/dial shuttle. Why didnt they simply replace vhs transport with bluray transport within same body!? I hate modern design (mirror, piano, glossy finish... all crap!)...
