Paramount Star Trek: Section 31 (2025)

Quote:
Paramount+ is officially moving forward on a “Star Trek: Section 31” project starring Michelle Yeoh, but it will now be an event film instead of a series, Variety has learned.

It was first reported that a Section 31 series with Yeoh was in development back in 2019. In the film, Yeoh will reprise the role of Emperor Philippa Georgiou, whom she began playing during Season 1 of “Star Trek: Discovery.”

Per the official logline, “Emperor Philippa Georgiou joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.” Rumors of a Yeoh-led Section 31 project began upon the conclusion of Season 1 of “Discovery,” after a deleted scene revealed Georgiou being approached by a member of the shadowy intelligence organization on the Klingon homeworld. The crimes of Star Fleet. Really liked Section 31 on DS9.

It's new Trek so I'll see it but this is gonna be a hard sell.

Just realized this is gonna be a Paramount + movie, not theatrical. It'll be successful there.

I think this is the right way to do it. Section 31 was one of DS9's more interesting concepts but I always found it unfortunate that it seemed to be the one lasting legacy from DS9 that was carried over to subsequent productions. I certainly never really wanted to watch a whole series about them. But a movie you can tell an interesting one-off story.

Plus, Michelle Yeoh is as big of a draw as she's ever been, so having her headline an original movie could be a great pull to Paramount+. And bonus points if this actually frees up the show resources to go to a Matalas-led PIC spinoff.

Section 31, awesome. Michelle Yeoh, AWESOME!

Realistically there was no way they were getting MY back for a series, so a mini-series or an event movie is fine by me. Georgiou is easily one of the best characters to come out of nuTrek.

So, so glad they are doing it as a movie. I hope they do more such movies that can tell an entire story and not require a whole season or seasons.

It would be nice to see a 2 hour Trek story told that didn't need $180 million budget or revolve around the end of Earth or the Federation every time.

So many medium/small scale stories to be told.

Give us a movie of Khan on Ceti Alpha 5, a movie about Lt. Palamas' offspring with Apollo, a Captain Garth story, a movie about the female Romulan Commander after she returned to the empire, Zephram Cochrane when he left Earth for good, stories about any of the characters before (or after) we saw them in the shows or movies or completely new characters in trek Universe stories.

Or if a story requires more than 2 hours then a true miniseries that tells the entire story with no cliffhangers or plot threads left hanging.

Section 31 series - meh.

Section 31 one-off movie - hell yeah.

Always seemed a dull idea for a Trek series to me. One off movie though, you can have all the good stuff and no flab. Yeoh can shine too, no need to spend time building a recurring ensemble to sustain a series when in a movie she's the star, period.

I hope it's a success and they do more one-offs. The scope of NuTrek will increase substantially that way, and if an idea doesn't work well they tried and it's onto the next one.

It's a shame it's not going to be a series but i'll take what i can get. Section 31 was the best part of Discovery after the Enterprise crew.

Maybe they will make more than one movie? If the first one is a hit, they might make more.

I never watched Discovery, so I'm not familiar with Mrs. Yeoh's character...and I don't remember any shadow groups on DS9, either. But the Klingons were well-developed on both TNG and DS9, so anything that explores them further could be cool.

You do not remember the Changeling virus and how they got the cure?

I never made it past the middle of Season 6 on DS9...so I guess I missed out on that storyline. I just remember Odo being taken back to the Great Link, temporarily losing his powers, and then getting them back thanks to a Changeling "baby".

Yeah, makes sense you wouldn't have seen it: Section 31 doesn't make its first appearance until late season six, then of course the Changeling virus and cure stuff doesn't appear until the seventh season.

Odo becoming a solid was the 4th season finale and getting his shifting back happened partway into season 5.
