United Kingdom Nightmare Castle 3D Blu-ray (1965) [Region Free] [BD-R]

This new Kickstarter looks interesting and is coming from Andrew Murchie's Deep Vision Studios. Given the quality of their other KS campaigns I have no hesitation in backing (plus I love 3D horror).

"Nightmare Castle" aka "The Night of The Doomed" has now been remastered to 3D for the first time, bringing a new dimension of terror and excitement to this already chilling tale. Using the latest AI technology we have used a dozen AI engines in producing this AI enhanced 3D blu-ray package - from film upscaling & depth mapping, right through to the final product packaging, AI has been at the core of this project.

Nightmare Castle 3D also sees the launch of our new AIPOP-3D Label which will focus on providing AI Enhanced 3D Conversions of classic films using the ever evolving AI tools as they come to market. This is only the first step in our and their evolution: stay tuned for more.

Very interesting. This kind of thing will only get better as AI software becomes more sophisticated. I've backed it because I think it has real potential. Megabucks conversions of old films aren't going to happen any more, but if the AI process can be finessed by someone who knows what they're doing - and Andrew Murchie is no hack - then the results should be worthwhile.

Looking forward to seeing how it holds up on a big screen. PQ looks good. I'd never heard of this film, but I do like period horror.

Yeah, I already have the film in 2D, I'll watch pretty much anything featuring Barbara Steele.

I can appreciate what they're doing with this but personally I can't get behind this. Looking at the analgyph 3D screenshots on their KS page, I find the distortion and warping very unnatural and unconvincing. I have plenty of great-looking 3D titles to watch and enjoy without needing to strain my eyes with poor-quality conversions. We're way past that now. These poor conversions are partially what helped kill early public interest. I'm not that desperate to see something new in 3D that I'll watch oddly-distorted imagery. This will just lead to more people being disappointed in 3D.

Is the 3D better than what my TV can do for 2D>3D conversions? Sure, but I never use that feature either because it's poor and why should I when there's plenty of 3D out there I haven't seen yet? I'd rather watch it in 2D as intended than a bad conversion.

Just my opinion but the last thing we need is more bad conversions hitting the market.

Or, we could wait and see what the results look like on 3D Blu.

It is said that if you don’t have anything nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything, so I’ve been keeping my mouth shut, but I couldn’t agree with you more.
And, with all the titles we are about to get in the near future from Kino, all of them remastered by the 3DFA, and the ones from Random Space Media, there is no way I’ll be supporting this.
I actually have no idea why this is even a thing. It’s basically an auto-conversion done by AI of a title that was never intended to be in 3D.

abso-bloody-lutely. Any efforts to bring new 3-D material to the market should be applauded and encouraged IMHO. If this project isn't funded then we'll never know how good/bad or average these AI conversions can be. Key thing for me is that it's a 'manual' conversion, not a cheap auto job that the Germans seem so fond of. Andrew seems to know his stuff and is upfront on the end results in his KS video. I am happy to back this.

It's not an autoconversion, that's the point. Andrew mentions that countless hours have been spent using manual AI tools to achieve the end result... And besides, even though we do have a nice list of upcoming releases from Bob's team these haven't exactly opened the 3-D floodgates. Anything new in the 3-D realm should be encouraged I think.

This might help those still on the fence...

As far as we are aware this is the first AI Enhanced 3D Blu-ray label and AI Enhanced 3D Blu-ray disc of this type in the world - using multiple AI Engines to enhance the production from initial conversion to the packaging of the product!

Previously 2D to 3D conversions were typically out of the budget for small indie producers like DVS, with figures ranging from anywhere between $100,000 to $20,000,000 having been discussed in the media. However with the new AI Tools and advancing digital video technologies it's now possible to convert 2D Films to 3D for a fraction of that budget.

Cheaper conversions have been available for some time, but these tended to be very poor, often auto conversions with the 2D image simply pushed back inside the screen. 3D TVs typically offered an auto-convert option but these were equally haphazard with depth being mistaken and generally odd results, although now and then you did get a shot that kind of worked.
Obviously I'm not involved in any way with this project, just a keen 3-D fan looking to help bring something new to market

It's been suggested on this thread that bad autoconversions may have helped kill 3D TV set sales.

I'd argue instead that sales were stillborn -- because sets were prohibitively expensive to begin with. I paid 3X for my 3D-capable Samsung Curve what I would have paid for a 2D Curve. There's your explanation right there.

And that's my explanation for why I'm happy to try any AI-enabled upconvert that looks halfway decent: I need to feed this expensive beast of a 3D TV in between 3DFA releases.

After all, it's a free market.
