Default Controller help for Windows XP/7

Yea, I know... what the heck am I using two ancient OSes for gaming? I'll get to that in a sec... but my immediate question is, what would you guys advise for a controller compatible with WinXP and Win7? I am looking at an XBOX360 controller with the appropriate drivers downloaded from Microsoft's site, but it is not clear if I will be able to map keyboard commands to the controller buttons. I am also looking at a Logitech controller, but again I cannot find if I can map the controls. Any help would be appreciated!

Now... Why, you ask, am I using WinXP and Win7? I am very well aware that each has security holes big enough to fly a star destroyer through, but I trust Microsoft about as far as I can throw them (I am a cyber-security analyst, and their little stunt of packaging malware in their updates to get people to upgrade to Windows 10 pi$$ed me off). I am running Ubuntu on my home system, with the Windows OSes running as VM sandboxes (effectively taking MS out of the loop). I am not a big gamer, so recent stuff will not run well under a VM (obviously), but the stuff I do play runs fine.

Thanks for the help!
