Default What are some highly regarded horror movies that disappointed you?

They can be mainstream films or cult films. Either one is fine.

Here's some of mine.

Jason Lives - Before I'm burned at the stake, let me explain. Friday the 13th is among several horror franchises I grew up watching as a kid. This franchise will always have a special place in my heart.

Also I wanna make it clear, I don't hate Jason Lives, but I'm still very disappointed by it.

With that said let me explain what I didn't like about Jason Lives.

I'm not a fan of C. J. Graham's performance as Jason. Physique wise I think he's a good fit for Jason, he's very big and imposing. But he moves too much like a robot. It's distracting and makes no sense. Jason is a zombie in this movie, why is he moving like he's a robot.

I can already sense people with pitchforks and torches coming for me.

I also hate the look of Jason in this movie. The tool belt and bright yellow gloves reminds me too much of Bob the builder. It just looks really dumb. I understand why it's there, I've listened to the dvd commentary. Regardless though it still looks dumb, and makes it hard to take Jason seriously.
The hockey mask looks like an over sized dinner plate in this movie. It's so painfully obvious the mask is too big for his head, and doesn't fit right.

I hated the scenes of Jason being shown from head to toe in broad daylight, and not even attempting to hide him. It's very off putting and takes away some of Jason's fear factor. The way Jason is framed and shot is very different compared to most of the other movies in the franchise.

The comedy falls flat in this movie. I don't mind comedy in horror movies. I generally love Evil Dead 2, The Babysitter, Nightmare On Elm Street part 3 and 4, Bride Of Chucky, and many other horror comedies.

Besides the scene with Nancy McLoughlin, the rest of the comedy in Jason Lives just doesn't work and comes off as forced and unfunny.

I'm not a fan of Thom Mathews as Tommy Jarvis. Nothing against the guy, he's a decent actor. He has this very confused facial expression for most of the movie, it makes it look like he's daydreaming and not really there.

He also has this really weird voice that's distracting at times, it kinda hard to explain. I have the same type of voice as him. The reason I sound like that is because I was mute for the first 6 years of my life, and had to spend many years learning how to speak properly.

His voice does sound a lot better in
[Show spoiler]Never Hike Alone
, that's probably due to his voice changing with age. Overall I like him a lot more in
[Show spoiler]Never Hike Alone
.

Again I have the same type voice as him, and my voice has slowly improved with age. It's just speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if he went through something similar to what I'm going through.

This Tommy Jarvis is my least favorite version of the character.
A lot of the characteristics from Part 4 and 5 Tommy are gone, like the mask making skills, being special effects nerd, and his overall cleverness, among others.

In this movie he's an unlikable moron as a protagonist. Granted the movie is totally aware of this, but that still doesn't make it better.

Ash Williams is a moron in the Evil Dead franchise as well, but the reason that works is because Bruce Campbell is incredibly charismatic and funny in those movies. It also helps that Ash gets punished whenever he acts like an idiot or jerk.

Speaking of Evil Dead, since that's on my mind, I'll probably re-watch some of Ash Vs Evil Dead later tonight. Great show by the way, I recommend it.

Besides the opening with the heart being ripped out, the violence in Jason Lives is incredibly tame and borderline bloodless compared to the previous 5 movies, and many of the latter movies like Jason Goes To Hell, Jason X, Freddy vs Jason, and the Reboot

I know it's not the filmmakers's fault. It was the Mpaa messing with the movie, and forcing them to remove most of the gore effects and violence. A similar thing happened with Part 7 as well. It's a shame that happened.

That being said though, the end result is still the same. This franchise is known for it's gore effects and creative ways in how it kills it's characters. That was the main selling point. This movie is almost bloodless except for the opening, and because of that it takes a lot of the bite out of it.

I didn't like the over saturation of Alice cooper music in the movie. Before someone tells me it's because I grew up in a different generation. I like a very wide variety of music.

I love classical music like Orpheus In The Underworld, Danse Macabre, and In The Hall Of The Mountain, among many others.

I like Taylor Swift's music. I'm a massive fan of Paramore. I like Linkin Park, Korn, Drowning Pool, Slipknot. I like several songs from System Of A Down. I like several of Ozzy Osbourne's songs.

I'm a fan of Billie Eilish, AC/DC, LL Cool J, Selena Gomez, and Nirvana.
Huey Lewis's Back In Time is generally awesome. I love Don't Fear The Reaper, and Youth Of America. There's tons of jazz music from the 40s I like a lot.

I apologize for the long list of songs and artists. I just wanted to make it clear it's not a generation thing, and it has nothing to do with my age. I like a wide variety of songs from different eras and genres.

For whatever reason I can't seem to find a Alice cooper song I enjoy.
So I wasn't a fan of having the movie over saturated with his music.

I think Alice cooper is a good musician, and from what I've he sounds like a really awesome dude. I just happen to be someone who isn't a fan of his music.

Overall the things I like about this movie is the cinematography and production design. It's a very good looking movie, and they do a good job of putting their budget to good use.

Harry Manfredini does a great job with the score.

I really like the scene of Magan helping Tommy escape. I don't know why but I like it, especially the red dot moment. Great scene what can I say.

I appreciate this movie taking a stance, and stating Jason did in fact die in the lake all those years ago. I'm in the camp that believes Jason died as a child and came back to life. So again I really appreciate that.

Also Jason was undead in Part 4. Joseph Zito was the director of Part 4, and on the commentary said that Jason was actually dead for real at the beginning of the movie. So Jason was officially undead since at least Part 4.

Even though there's things about the movie I didn't like, this isn't a boring movie. As Jeremy Jahns has said before, the worst thing a movie can do is bore you, and thankfully this movie isn't boring.

I was amazed when I recently watched The Exorcist for the first time and basically everything iconic about the movie happens in the final 15 minutes.

That's a movie I plan to rewatch at some point. I've only seen the movie once, and that was back in 2016 I believe.

Anyway I wasn't blown away by the movie, but of course it's been 7 years, so who knows maybe my opinion will change with a rewatch.

The Haunting ('63)

Julie Harris is like nails on a chalkboard to me, and in this film she is at her shrieking hysterical worst. Just makes the entire film such a grating experience. I'd honestly rather watch the 1999 version, and that was kinda shite.

Same from Barbra in the original NOTLD, movie is groundbreaking but she ruins the movie for me with her neurotic screeching and whimpering.

It's very rare to find someone who doesn't like Nightmare On Elm Street 3, but I respect that.

Personally my favorite of that franchise is between the original and New Nightmare. But then again I like most of the Nightmare On Elm Street films.

The only ones I dislike are Freddy's Dead and the 2010 Remake.

Even with Freddy's Dead there's still things I like about it. Like the flashback showing Freddy strangling his wife. Robert's acting in that flashback is creepy as heck. The look in his eyes generally scares me.

Only ones that come to mind right now are...

Barbarian. I was completely with it until the big reveal in then it just fell apart for me and became stupid.

Men. Bored me to death and just thought the whole thing was a waste of time. First teaser trailer was more effective than the actual film.

I remember when The Ring remake came out when I was in my last year of high school everyone was going on about how scary it was and when I finally saw it I was like "That's it?" I don't know if it's because I've been watching horror movies since I was really young but I wasn't impressed. I won't put blame on the movie. Just people over hyping it.

SMILE... Cliché, predictable, and boring. I was actually shocked at the many moments that I jokingly called out every horror trope that I "knew" would happen, only for it to really happen. Like, for real? This is what happens when you adapt a horror short film and remake it to feature length... You just stuff it full of every plot point and trick you've seen in other movies.... and it was a blockbuster. Hoo. Ray.
