Terrible NHL Hockey Injury, Zednik cut on Neck by Skate...

Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik was taken off the ice in Sunday's game against the Buffalo Sabres after taking a skate to his neck.

With the Sabres leading 4-3 midway through the third period, linemate Olli Jokinen - who was being checked in the Sabres' zone - fell forward and his skate accidently caught Zednik's neck.

Zednik bled profusely from the cut, but was able to skate toward his bench where he was met by the trainer and immediately ushered to the locker room.

Zednik is listed as stable and was transported to a hospital.

Players, coaches and fans sat in silence after the accident, and the game was delayed for 15 minutes as the blood was cleaned off the ice. Fans gave a standing ovation after the public address announcer gave the update on Zednik's condition.

Prior to resuming the game, referee Bill McCreary and Panthers coach Jacques Martin consulted in the tunnel outside the Panthers' dressing room.

Sabres general manager Darcy Regier was also spotted talking with NHL vice president Colin Campbell, who was at HSBC Arena to watch his son Gregory play for the Panthers.

Zednik, 32, signed a two-year deal with the Panthers last summer. The native of Slovakia has played in 12 NHL seasons with the Panthers, New York Islanders, Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens.

He has 15 goals and 26 points this season.

It's not the first time that hockey fans in Buffalo witnessed such an uncomfortable incident. Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk had his jugular sliced in a 1989 game against the St. Louis Blues.

I was watching this game on NHL Center Ice. Very, very sad event. I've never heard an arena that silent, EVER. They said that he is at the hospital in stable Condition.

Lets all pray that he makes it through this OK.

I'm sure everyone has seen the clip where this happened to a goaltender. If you haven't and are curious to see it and have the stomach I'm sure you can Youtube it.

I don't know how the goaltender survived this event and something like this has always worried me with hockey. I'm surprised we don't see something like this more often.

Yeah, you're refering to Clint Malarchuk and he did survive. He is now the goalie coach for the Columbus Blue Jackets.

I didn't see this game today (I was too busy spittin' insults at the refs in the Detroit/Anaheim game, which was TOTAL BULLSH*T and needs to be investigated by the NHL). Anyhow, this really sucks. I hope Rich is OK. It seems bad luck always befalls the Sabers. I'll be keeping tabs on NHL.com to see how he's doing.
