It truly is about time! Although there was a lot of great news in the Direct, I can't help but feel this announcement overshadowed them all. I've beaten the original dozens of times, but I envy anyone who hasn't played this classic yet. You are in for a treat. Hopefully this remake opens the door for a possible sequel.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking, that this could lead to a sequel. Hopefully they've got their issues straightened out with Square.
I also hope this could lead to the original Paper Mario and Paper Mario 2 getting a much needed graphical update |

Man…I would be so hyped about a remake/remaster of the original Paper Mario.

Looks nice and cute of course, but am disappointed this is yet another game remake. It's like companies aren't interested doing something new.

Played a ton of RPG's in my life, and this one is in my top-5. One of the best surprises Nintendo has given me in a long time. Hope this ups the odds of a sequel on their next console. There should have been a proper Mario RPG 2 ages ago.

Rights issues with Square prevented it. Really didn't help that Hiroshi Yamauchi told them to 'never come back' when they defected to Sony, and that he claimed people who play RPGs were pathetic losers who live in their parents' basement

Didn't even think of it until just now, but the title of this game is just Super Mario RPG, not Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, as the game was originally named. Wonder if this move is just to simplify the name or a move to avert some sort of conflict with Square Enix.

Same reasoning behind Nintendo calling the Star Fox 64 remake 'Star Fox 64 3D' in all regions, even though in Europe it had been known as 'Lylat Wars' I don't think they'd be remaking it if there was any conflict between them and Square. After all, Square own the rights certainly to Geno and probably Mallow too, and the feud with Square is why there was never a proper sequel (just spiritual sequels) |
