Default Super Mario RPG Remake

Quote:
Super Mario RPG, Mario’s first role-playing adventure from 1996, is being remade for Nintendo Switch. The new version, which has updated graphics but otherwise looks faithful to the original, will be released on Nov. 17, 2023, Nintendo announced during its June Nintendo Direct.

It's about time!

Looks nice. I do wonder a few things, like: will there be voicework, or extra content?

I’m in for this since I never played the original. Should be finished with Spidey by then.

It truly is about time! Although there was a lot of great news in the Direct, I can't help but feel this announcement overshadowed them all. I've beaten the original dozens of times, but I envy anyone who hasn't played this classic yet. You are in for a treat. Hopefully this remake opens the door for a possible sequel.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking, that this could lead to a sequel. Hopefully they've got their issues straightened out with Square.

I also hope this could lead to the original Paper Mario and Paper Mario 2 getting a much needed graphical update

Man…I would be so hyped about a remake/remaster of the original Paper Mario.

Looks nice and cute of course, but am disappointed this is yet another game remake. It's like companies aren't interested doing something new.

90% of the games I’m anticipating are remakes, so I’m fine with it

Now they are. Before, they didn't used to be remakes.

Feels lazy just to do remakes than new original games.

Played a ton of RPG's in my life, and this one is in my top-5. One of the best surprises Nintendo has given me in a long time. Hope this ups the odds of a sequel on their next console. There should have been a proper Mario RPG 2 ages ago.

Rights issues with Square prevented it. Really didn't help that Hiroshi Yamauchi told them to 'never come back' when they defected to Sony, and that he claimed people who play RPGs were pathetic losers who live in their parents' basement

It made it to a BETA state on the N64.

That's just Paper Mario. They couldn't call it Super Mario RPG 2 because presumably Square have some legal rights there. It's also why you've rarely seen Geno or Mallow in any other game

If you have My Best Buy Plus or Total this is part of their B2G1 sale on Switch games right now. It also works for games not on the “qualifying” list I confirmed when I made my order. $40 day one for a Nintendo game.

Didn't even think of it until just now, but the title of this game is just Super Mario RPG, not Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, as the game was originally named. Wonder if this move is just to simplify the name or a move to avert some sort of conflict with Square Enix.

It's probably because the Japanese title was simply Super Mario RPG and Nintendo want to use the same title for all regions (After all, people just call it Super Mario RPG anyway. Who really calls it 'Legend of the Seven Stars'?)

Same reasoning behind Nintendo calling the Star Fox 64 remake 'Star Fox 64 3D' in all regions, even though in Europe it had been known as 'Lylat Wars'

I don't think they'd be remaking it if there was any conflict between them and Square. After all, Square own the rights certainly to Geno and probably Mallow too, and the feud with Square is why there was never a proper sequel (just spiritual sequels)
