It is great to have this type of news. The preassure on Universal and Paramount to release in Blu-ray is increasing by the day.

"The milestones to watch for are Blu-ray player prices falling below $200, and Universal and Paramount also announcing their support for Blu-ray," he said. "If these two milestones are reached, the consumer adoption of Blu-ray will take off."

I think the Warner announcement has had a trickle down effect in this. It caused more people to buy PS3's and now those new users are checking out the Blu's. The $200 player price point will merely cause the BD to HD-DVD rental ratio to further increase. The PS3 is proving to be a significant "player" in the format war IMHO.

If Netflix goes BD exclusive, that's another power punch to Toshiba

I really hope this format war is ending soon.
I kind of understand their business point of view.
You don't want to invest in something that's not gonna last but in the mean time you want to make sure that the customers are happy. Since Hidef disc are more expensive than regular DVD. You could end up loosing alot of money when one format lost.

I really hope Toshiba calling it quit and Paramount and Universal come to their senses.

This is what Toshiba is doing to Paramount and Universal.

Of course Blu has the advantage. Blu has always had the upper hand. Netflix should go Blu exclusive.

While I would like for Netflix (and everyone else) to go Blu-ray exclusive, I don't think that there is much pressure or incentive for them to do so at the moment as they are not a B&M retailer and don't have to concern themselves with how to allocate valuable shelf space.

Of course they have that problem. They only have a certain amount of square feet of warehouse storage space, which will only hold a finite amount of stock. Granted, the problem isn't as accute as it is for a B&M store, but it is a problem nonetheless.

As long as there is a demand to rent HD-DVDs, Netflix will be renting them. Especially if most stores stop selling them.

As I have never been to a Netflix warehouse, I can't comment of the space or lack thereof in them. However, I still don't believe that with only ~400 or so hd dvd titles (and I don't know that Netflix carries each and every one of them) it is a major problem for them at the moment which is also the qualifier that I put in my initial post

I am surprised to see this isnt in the forums yet. I think this is going to be a real death blow to HD-DVD, who will rent the new HD-DVDs? Hell, even I kept an A2 (WM $98 special ) solely for the purpose of renting HD-DVDs. Everyday there is a less and less a reason for HD-DVDs existance.

Looks like it is time to go ahead and sell that puppy. Now if I could only get a nice Panny-50

Do you have a link to back-up that they are going Blu? If anything their amount of titles for demand is horrible and would be a terrible time to make that worse.

Cool. Maybe with only one high-def format to deal with they can increase their inventory and improve service on the blus.

Which retailer will be next? C'mon Best Buy, you know you want to.

I am really hoping that the service will get better. I sent them an email two weeks ago on that subject.

I did get one suprise. Sunshine went from Very Long Wait to shipping overnight. I thought I was going to get Session 9..and presto, it was Sunshine.

BTW, Sunshine was a movie I was hesitant on a blind buy. It is well worth purchasing...although the end...man they were so close to greatness!
