Disney SHOUT! Factory DVD Request: "St. Elsewhere: The Complete Series"

Dear Brian,

I have a proposal for SHOUT! Studios: to make a licensing deal with 20th Television (as of 2017 a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company) for SHOUT! Studios to issue and release, for the very first time EVER on DVD, "St. Elsewhere: The Complete Series," a loving showcase of all 137 hour-long episodes of the hit '80s Hospital Drama "St. Elsewhere" 100% Complete, 100% Uncut, AND 100% Unedited, just the way that each episode originally aired on the NBC Television Network.

Created by Bruce Paltrow, "St. Elsewhere" enjoyed a successful 6-year run on NBC from October 26, 1982 - May 25, 1988; the show focused on a group of recent Medical School graduates at the fictional St. Eligius Teaching Hospital in Boston, where they were taught by Dr. Donald Westphall (Ed Flanders), a widower whose wife had been tragically killed in a Car Accident sometime before the show began, leaving him the single parent of a severely Autistic son, Tommy (Chad Allen) and elder teen daughter Lizzie (Dana Short).

Among Dr. Westphall's students, all of whom intended to have a 3-year Hospital Residency (many of them staying on the entire 6-year run of the show) included Dr. Wayne Fiscus (Howie Mandel), the Comic Relief character; Dr. Jack Morrison (David Morse), a newly expectant father whose wife, Nina (Gina Hecht), soon after their young son Pete was born, would tragically be killed in a freak at-home accident, making Jack a widower father to Pete; and Dr. Phil Chandler (Denzel Washington), the unsure-of-himself Resident.

Other principal characters included Dr. Mark Craig (William Daniels), a brilliant heart surgeon with an ego of an Ass; Dr. Victor Ehrlich (Ed Begley, Jr.), a Protege of Dr. Craig and student of his; and Dr. John Gideon (Ronny Cox), who at the start of Season 6 took over for Dr. Westphall as Hospital Chief of Services after Westphall quit.

Though Steven Bochco's "N.Y.P.D. Blue" always gets the credit, 6 years earlier, in 1987, Ed Flanders' last regular "St. Elsewhere" appearance (before the finale) culminated with Ed delivering Network TV's first case of Deliberate Nudity after Ed Flanders showed his Butt Naked Ass in front of both Ronny Cox and the home viewers watching that night; despite never ranking above #49 in the Nielsen ratings, however, it wasn't ratings that caused "St. Elsewhere" to bid a fond farewell to Network TV, but rather Financial--or in other words, the show's studio, MTM Enterprises, Inc., wanted more money than NBC was willing to give them to continue for Season 7 and Beyond.

The Series Finale telecast on May 25, 1988 was one of Network TV's most memorable of all Series Finales; among other notable events: Dr. Craig and his wife Ellen (Bonnie Bartlett) left Boston for Cleveland; Dr. Daniel Auschlander (Norman Lloyd), after a series-long battle with Liver Cancer, died of a Massive Stroke unrelated to the Cancer battle; after Dr. Gideon left for a job in San Francisco, Dr. Westphall returned to his old job at St. Eligius; and in the final scene of the show, the entire 6-year run of "St. Elsewhere" was proven to be the figment of the imagination of Tommy Westphall, with Dr. Auschlander simultaneously returning to Earth as Donald Westphall's father, helping Donald (a real Construction Worker) raise Tommy.

Reruns aired for a short time in Syndication on local TV stations e.g. Chicago's WGN-TV Channel 9, after which reruns of "St. Elsewhere" aired on Nickelodeon from April 29, 1996 - July 4, 1997 as part of its Nick at Nite lineup--initially as part of an all-night sneak peek of sister network TV Land (then officially called Nick at Nite's TV Land), where reruns began airing weekdays starting the next morning through October 1, 2000; simultaneously, reruns of "St. Elsewhere" aired on Nick at Nite on Saturday nights from May 4, 1996 - July 6, 1996 as part of a weekly rotating sneak peek of TV Land called Nick at Nite's TV Land Sampler, after which reruns moved permanently to TV Land with a final airing on Nick at Nite as part of the simulcast TV Land and Nick at Nite Greatest Episodes Marathon, a joint venture between TV Land and TV Guide Magazine, with the marathon simulcast on Nick at Nite and TV Land from June 30, 1997 - July 4, 1997; the Bravo Cable Channel would later air the show in reruns during the early 2000s starting on October 2, 2000.

Though I'm aware that the Complete Series is on Hulu, simultaneously, Brian, I'm also aware that several episodes on Hulu after the first season are Syndicated Prints as opposed to the original NBC Television Network prints per each and every episode.

Tentatively, Brian, "St. Elsewhere: The Complete Series" shall become available by SHOUT! Studios for the first time EVER on DVD on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at a cost of ONLY $59.99 wherever DVDs are sold.

Sincerely,
Steve Arino

BTW, I sent this via email to Brian Ward over at SHOUT! Studios; I hope and pray to God that the complete series of "St. Elsewhere" becomes available on DVD from SHOUT! Studios (formerly SHOUT! Factory). Meanwhile, Stay Tuned!
