it shouldn’t be a surprise. his last is based production as hollow man. so to think he wouldn’t shoot in europe, where he is able to get the funding for the projects he wants, is silly. |

Title: Sans Compter. It's an adaptation of a novel by Philippe Djian (the same author who wrote the story Elle was based on).

we’ll see if he even bothers returning to “american cinema”
he has more freedom and better support in europe. he mentioned in a q&a that he hasn’t wanted to do anything in america because it was too restrictive, and not even in a violence or nudity way. in a plot or marketability way. he says something to the effect of reading a script where the main character dies and wanting to make the movie, and then a producer saying “but the main character can’t die!” i doubt any studio has the balls to fund that young sinner or whatever it was called that he was going to make with ed neumeier. he’s also 85. so i’m not sure how much it would even be worth to him go go through the grueling process of getting us studio funding. |

elle played fairly wide and expanded over two months, and was even re-released before and during the oscar’s. black book was released in dutch with no stars in limited release. benedetta even played in some cities. (probably only in ten to twenty major markets i would guess) i don’t know that a studio is going to spend a ton of marketing a paul verhoeven movie. his movies have come out in the us from sony pictures classic and mubi. i guess the only issue is, is a studio going to spend $20 million marketing a €10 million production? sadly, international fare doesn’t make a ton of money at the box office in the us. |
