Default Is the Switch still worth getting or wait for a potential successor next year?

As the title says it all. Is the Nintendo Switch still worth purchasing anymore given that it’s over six years old now and Nintendo will likely do a successor console next year according to numerous claims & rumors?
If I was to buy a Switch, I’m mainly buying it for its 1st/2nd party exclusive titles like Mario or Smash Bros for examples. So the Switch will basically act as a secondary device for me with my Xbox Series X obviously being my main gaming platform overall.
And lastly is it okay to get the Lite model if I have no real desire to use it on my TV or would it be a little wiser getting the normal model just to have a little more options overall?

It depends. If there are games you want to play and you have the bandwidth to play those games, go for it. Since you are looking at the Switch Lite, I’d recommend waiting until October in case an updated version or holiday bundle is released.

There is no successor announced so you could be waiting a long time or less than a year, we have been expect a new Switch for more than a year now but that hasn’t made it happen.

If you're ok with buying a system that will probably get a successor in a year or so, I'd say go for it. make a list of the games you're interested in, and it might help you make a decision.

as for which switch:
Switch Lite: is the better handheld. smaller, more comfortable in hand. the battery could be better, but overall, a better portable device
Regular Switch: You can play games on the tv, you can use it on a table and play with a controller while watching something on the tv. some games are better suited for the TV

so I guess the regular switch wins for giving more options.

but keep in mind that the switch graphics on a big screen, are like 2 generations behind. in some games the small screen is a blessing

id say just wait a year. Even Microsoft and Sony think the Switch pro (or whatever it will be called) will be released within the next year.

I don't think the Lite model has the OLED screen, which to me is worth the higher cost if you plan to mostly play handheld. I'd get the OLED model.

But if nothing else I would wait to see if the next Switch will have backwards compatibility (and don't trust rumors--wait for an official announcement). If it does, I would wait since you'll be able to have the best of both worlds when you get the new system. If the successor doesn't have BC I would just get an OLED Switch now and start enjoying its library of games.

Doesn't sound like this will be an improvement in the hypothetical new console coming next year. Not hearing much desire to improve over a 720p display.

If you're bored and want to play a bunch of good games then I say jump in. Between Mario and Zelda you've got a bunch of great console exclusives that will keep you busy. With a new console you're probably going to want to play the new games coming out with it so there's a whole library of games you might never get to. I'd say just catch up now.

The supposed release date seems to keep getting pushed back - not probably looking at very late 2024. It really depends on whether you can hold out another year and change. You say you have no intention of playing docked, so in that case you might consider a Lite for just $200.

I'm still very much tempted by the OLED as I've been playing a lot of the Castlevania Advance games handheld. However I have a launch system and plan on modding it after the new console launches and don't want an extra Switch lying around.

720p is fine for a small screen, if keeping the same resolution mean we'd get more 60fps games, that would be a good compromise. but they have to make the dock improve the resolution somehow. maybe a built in graphics processor like the mclassic could do the job?

1440p/60fps as the standard would be great for me.

There's rumors that the next-gen Switch would include Nvidia's DLSS technology, which should allow for better image quality even while if the games aren't running at especially high resolutions. I don't think we're likely to see 1440p60 as the standard, considering that the Xbox Series S, which is guaranteed to be much more powerful than whatever Nintendo puts out, frequently drops down to 1080p or even lower in modern games while also lacking the 60fps support the Series X offers.
