Question HELP: PS3, good for me?

I want to get a new Blu Ray player and I am wondering if the PS3 is for me...

- I am very much into gaming but I have heard the PS3 has had issues with choppyness (especially with sport games, which is what I primarily play).

- I would also just like to know the limits of the PS3 as a Blu Ray player. What are the pros and cons? (I think i saw someone on this forum say that it can only output a 5.1 audio setup, is this true?)

-I would also like to know what kind of firmware updates the PS3 can complete (Such as BD Live) and how future proof of a BD player it is.

I am asking all this because I do not want to buy another Blu Ray player/game console for a while.

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED, THANKS

the ps3 as a blu-ray player is future proof. It will be upgradeable to 2.0 (BD-Live) and soon we will have an update for dts-hd ma. Those are the only two things it doesn't have but will get soon. Also, the choppiness is a lie. Madden sucked last year but that will be fixed. All of the other sports games are awesome. Don't worry this year all the sports games will be better han 360. Also MLB the show is way better than 2k baseball. you can't go wrong with the PS3

O yea and the PS3 can do 7.1 as long as you have a 7.1 reciever

The main reason I don't use my PS3 for watching my Blus is the lack of DTS High Definition Master Audio (DTS HDMA). That's a High Definition audio standard for certain Blu Ray movies. Do NOT believe the hype - some may follow up with comments that it's coming. I call b-shit! Until it's announced it's complete vapourware. And until HDMA is actually being decoded by your PS3 it's still vapourware. Rumours aside, the lack of 1 audio codec is hardly an issue given your list of requirements.

However, unless you've got the amp to decode this you're not missing anything.

On a more personal note, I find the Picture Quality (PQ) on my standalone to be a little better than the PS3. But given your list of requirements that's not something that should disuade you.

I have seen no issues with choppiness in games. But then these comments might actually have something to do with the TV that people are using. Response time in a monitor does introduce the potential for a choppy result.

PS3 has wi-fi connectivity. If you've got a wireless router you're set. Otherwise, plug in an Ethernet cable and you can easily update the firmware of the PS3. Sony have already announced Blu Profile 2.0 (Gives you BDLive - the net interactive equivilent to HD-DVD) for the PS3.

In short, based on your requirements - you will not be disappointed.

Coding problem not hardware problem. First/second generation cross platform games is not gonna look well.

So far can't decode DTS HDMA. It can decode Dolby TrueHD. If you want to output more than 5.1 audio, get a HDMI receiver with 7.1 multichannel input and you're good to go; that is also THE way to go with any BD player.

The 40GB version does not do SACD. The other versions do.

The PS3 is a Bonus View BD player. It has all the hardware to be a BD-Live player and just need a firmware update.

is DTS HDMA a much better audio codec than DOLBY TRUEHD?

and are both of these audio formats usually found on the same release?

(btw, i am buying a 7.1 receiver with my new player, either an onkyo 705, marantz or sony es)

Ok to actually answer your questions

PS3 is the most future proof player out there to date.

Games choppyness is problems with the frame rate, doesn't happen in a lot of titles but in a few. (Doesn't affect your fun though)

Yeah i think it is limited to 5.1.

yes it can output 7.1 and no dolby truehd and dts hd ma are not on the same movies. New Line Cinemas and Fox are the companies that mainly use dts hd-ma

Personally, I prefer HDMA. Of course, I don't have any Blus that have both codecs on them. It's either PCM, TrueHD or HDMA for the most part.

Is HDMA much better? Mathematically it's not. Do I find myself experiencing a richer sound with HDMA? Yes, but I'll acknowledge this may the bias induced by HDMA sounding louder. Have I seen TrueHD on many Blu's? Sony does it for sure. But not many other studios do.

Which begs the question - what are the proportion of the HD codecs on blus? I'd love to know if someones got the data on that.

An irony - I've got 2 BLus in 7.1 PCM. No movies with 7.1 HDMA or TrueHD 7.1.

It will fallback to the other DTS codecs that are embedded in the stream.

Most people expect to see a future PS3 firmware update to add support for it... but nothing has been officially confirmed AFAIK. There has been lots of speculation as to why it's not there right now .. do a search for more meanderings on the subject if you want to dig deeper.
