Default Count Dracula 4K UHD (1970) (Severin)

Quote:
THE WORLDWIDE UHD PREMIERE
RESTORED FROM THE ORIGINAL NEGATIVE
WITH 5+ HOURS OF SPECIAL FEATURES
INCLUDING THE DOCUMENTARY DRÁCULA BARCELONA
PLUS BRUNO NICOLAI SOUNDTRACK CD AND MORE

In early 2023, a Madrid film archivist made a startling discovery: the uncut camera negative of COUNT DRACULA, in pristine condition and untouched for over 50 years. This gothic masterpiece from writer/director Jess Franco can now be experienced like never before, from its brilliant performances by Christopher Lee as the Count, Herbert Lom as Van Helsing, Soledad Miranda as Lucy, Maria Rohm as Mina and Klaus Kinski as Renfield to its sumptuously unnerving cinematography and eerie Bruno Nicolai score.

COUNT DRACULA is newly scanned in 4K with over five total hours of Special Features, including the U.S. Premiere of Carles Prats’ 2017 documentary DRÁCULA BARCELONA, which chronicles the simultaneous filming of CUADECUC VAMPIR by Pere Portabella and Franco’s horror classic.

Cool news! This is a fascinating film, and Lee gives a magnificent performance. This is the first time on film Dracula starts out as an old man, but gets younger as he drinks blood, as in the novel.

Vincent Price was originally considered for the role of Van Helsing in this production.

I just want the first hammer Dracula with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee in 4K.

I like Dracula adaptations so I'll pick this up. I've seen it and honestly it's a bit boring but it's kinda interesting in terms of the cast and it's sort of close to the story if I recall correctly. Wonder if the new restoration will liven things up a bit.

It's a shame it doesn't include CUADECUC VAMPIR like the previous Severin release.

Ha, I came this close to buying the BD in the Orbit sale today.

I hope Severin keeps pumping out as much Franco as humanly possible, 'cause I'll keep buying 'em.

In for this. Wonder if we'll get the Soledad Miranda films next.

I am in for ANY Franco up through the mid 70s. After that, I just pick and choose. I bet I am missing out on some good ones. I did pick up Faceless on UHD to give it another chance after swearing it off after disliking it on DVD. Later day Franco reminds me of later Lamberto Bava. Not really good. Funny thing for me is that I didn't give Rollin a chance for a long time because my reference point was his ill fitting reshoots for Christine/AVATLD. Figured he was a hack. I was wrong on Rollin, and now view him as great. Franco just makes batshit crazy films I enjoy. Used to prefer the Towers era but now it's stuff like Christine and Exorcism that I prefer.

Strange that it's never been released in 1.66 or 1.85:1.

There's this separate release that has it with Umbracle:

This Italian DVD says it's in 1.78 tho I haven't gotten around to confirm it.

I saw it in Widescreen 1.85 in the theater back then.

I think that's part from watching it in 4:3 / open matte as Franco's extreme close ups and zoom-ins become mild close ups and semi zooms

Yeah, it had a separate release by Second Run that's still available, too, but it was on the previous Severin release and goes hand in hand with the real film, so it's curious why it was left off this time when that other documentary is included.

I guess they want $74 instead of $50.

I believe you’re thinking of John Badham’s Dracula from 1979.

Whoops! Could've sworn a UK label was also working on Franco's film. Possibly 88 Films.
