Paramount Varsity Blues 4K UHD (1999)

Paramount will be releasing Varsity Blues (1999) on 4K UHD on January 9th for its 25th Anniversary!

Quote:
The hit high school football comedy-drama comes to 4K Ultra HD. At first, backup quarterback Jonathan "Mox" Moxom (James Van Der Beek) is nowhere close to being a star athlete. Perfectly content to stay on the bench, he has no time for coach Kilmer’s (Oscar winner Jon Voight), win-at-all-cost strategies. But when the starting quarterback is injured, Mox is in the game, and soon confronting the pressures and temptations of gridiron glory. Soon everyone in Mox's football-crazed community will realize there's not just a new star quarterback in town, there's a new kind of hero. This exciting and often funny coming-of-age story features an outstanding supporting cast that includes Paul Walker, Amy Smart, Scott Caan, Ali Larter, and Jesse Plemons.
Original write-up:

[Show spoiler]A new listing has just shown up at Amazon for Varsity Blues (1999), releasing on January 9th, 2024. It's listed as "Remastered Edition" and is a 2-Disc set. It's currently listed as a Blu-ray, which I often see with Paramount 4K titles for some reason (Hustle and Flow was the same). The film is streaming in 4K with Dolby Vision, and has its 25th Anniversary next year, so I'd be surprised if this wasn't a 4K listing. I'll update the thread when more details come out

If you're going to give me James Van Der Beek on 4K, give me The Rules of Attraction goddamit!

I used to love this movie in high school and haven't seen it since that time. I wonder if it actually holds up.

I watched it a few months back after having not watching it in forever. It's definitely a movie of its time and not one of the better sports movies, but I still enjoyed it.

Regarding Amy Smart, I'd be happy just to get a regular old BD of Outside Providence.

Never seen the movie, but everytime I see the title, the song "My Hero" pops in to my head.

^ It's fun, and yes, terrific soundtrack. Collective Soul "Run" is another I frequently associate with the movie. Will definitely be upgrading.

I couldn’t stand this movie when I saw it in theaters almost 25 years ago, and I’m sure it’s not any better now. Like the other person was commenting, I’d rather see “The Rules of Attraction” get a 4K release instead!

This one is pure 90s nostalgia for me. Van Der Beek was the bigger star at the time but Paul Walker (RIP), was up and coming at the time. I have not watched it in years. Curious how the remaster will look. Doubt it will be a Day 1 purchase for me.

Ali Larter, Amy Smart and who could forget Miss. Davis!

It's sort of like the MTV version of Friday Night Lights. The book came out in 1990 and the 2004 film adaptation is obviously much more grittier, serious, and realistic than Varsity Blues. They share similar themes and settings. The pressures, highs and lows, that high school varsity football players feel in a small Texas town.

I've re-watched the movie a couple of times on Blu-ray and it still holds up. Definitely upgrading to the 4K disc.
