United Kingdom Miami Vice (2006) (88 Films)

Purchase link: 88 Films
Release date: 27th November (for now)

Quote:
Going back to the original TV show which he’d helped create, Michael Mann (Manhunter, Heat, Thief) wrote and directed this big-screen revisit of his well-loved property. Starring Collin Farrell (In Bruges, The Batman) and Jamie Foxx (Collateral, Django Unchained) this neo-noirish thriller drips with the filmmaker’s distinctive vision. Complex, cool and cinematically perfect it's a must for all completist collectors of Mann’s impressive back catalogue.

A bit underwhelming after the wait, but I’ll be buying it for the documentary, which is apparently worthwhile. Looks like the deleted scenes are going to be forever stuck on a server at Forward Pass/Universal never to see the light of day.

What's a 'Double-Walled O-Ring' & how does it differ from a regular slipcase?

A slipcase is open along one long edge.

An O-ring is open along the top and bottom edges so can slip out the case upwards or downwards.

Shame it's only a standard blu ray. Collateral is surprisingly stunning in 4K and I'd have loved to see Miami Vice get the same treatment. I already have the older disc as well as an imported directors cut from the states, so I think I'd wait for a price drop before double dipping.

I think they did this for God of Gamblers. It's basically a thicker O-ring/slipcover that feels a little bit more luxurious. Should honestly be the standard for some of the prices we're paying these days (or even better, the hard slipcovers Arrow used for a few of their recent titles, e.g. Demons 4K)!

Nothing compelling me to keep the preorder as I have 4 copies already

Was hoping it would be a 4K UHD. I already have both versions on Blu-ray.

But I'll end up buying this new release too because it's such a good film.

Does a 4k source for this movie even exist? It was shot digital in the early days of the format and has this typical digital video look to it. I would assume it was filmed in 2K at best, if not even lower resolution.

Collateral didn't, yet the upscale looks brilliant.

It was filmed as a mix of mostly 1080p, 35mm for a handful of scenes. But was ultimately mastered in 2K. Without going back to the original sources, they'd just upscale the 2K master. So you'd get a slither of extra detail at best, but less compression issues.

The HDR would suit the night photography really well, it's a real shame

So they announced a UHD last year, and simply gave up?

They announced the UHD in a (now deleted, I think) response to a question about whether Miami Vice would be upgraded to 4k, considering how delayed the release was, on Facebook. They haven't provided an explanation yet as to why they decided to only do a blu, but it may have been that they found Miami Vice didn't benefit so much from 4k HDR to justify the extra costs.

I think it's still dope that this is coming out, however, and that new doc sounds fantastic.

So they dropped the Michael Mann audio commentary from the US BD of the extended cut...
The rest of the bonus features seem to be the existing BD features, with just the added retrospective doc...
And it's listed as region-locked, unlike the original Universal BDs from the US and UK of the two cuts. ...

88 also drop the existing commentary from The Thomas Crown Affair but made new extras so definitely seems they don’t want to pay for old commentaries.

The original releases were from Universal themselves who own global rights hence region free. At least in the U.K. Universal make independent labels licencing their titles region lock, so no surprise it’s RB locked.

Very similar mo for the two releases. Port the archival extras minus the director commentary and add film journalist commentary plus interviews with DP and composer; stand alone for Crown but folded into the new doc for Vice, which also includes an interview with, I presume, Pieter Jan Brugge (producer).

To be fair, in the case of Thomas Crown, the MGM BD didn't have the commentary either, it was only on the original DVD. Some editions of the MGM Thomas Crown BD packaged the DVD with it, so you got the commentary that way.

If only there was something other than resolution that UHD was able to offer
