Default It's a Christmas movie

So if there are Christmas decorations it is a Christmas movie right?

Works for me. I've watched The French Connection during Christmas movie marathons because of the one scene where Hackman wears a Santa suit.

A lot of movies take place during the Christmas season, but the stories don't revolve around the holiday itself. As such, they're not usually considered the stereotypical "Christmas movie".

It's not Christmas around my house without the Shane Black Xmas Trilogy: Lethal Weapon, The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I once recommended The Hudsucker Proxy as a Xmas movie to people. There were complaints. All I could think about was the snowy climax. (not a euphemism)

Here's a Christmas movie that is definitely a Christmas movie because it's set at Christmas but isn't full of itself about Christmas except it's got a Christmassy name. And it's ace. (Plus if I stick my head out my window, I can see the street where the main character's therapist lives)

It does irk me a bit that Die Hard is most commonly debated as to whether it counts as Christmas, but few ever bring up:
  • American Psycho
  • Blast of Silence
  • Brazil
  • Cast Away
  • Catch Me If You Can
  • City of Lost Children
  • Cobra
  • Go
  • The Hunt
  • Jaws: The Revenge
  • Jerry Maguire
  • Last Action Hero
  • The Lady in the Lake
  • Mean Girls
  • Prometheus
  • Rocky I and IV
  • Stalag 17
  • Tangerine
  • Three Days of the Condor

And like hundreds of others

If the word “Christmas” is said, it’s a Christmas movie. In The Hateful Eight, Joe Gage is going home to visit his mother for Christmas, so it’s a Christmas movie.

There's movies like American Psycho that have a Christmas scene, but you could remove it or change the setting and it wouldn't have any impact on the overall film. Patrick and Evelyn could have just as well been at a wine festival or a charity dinner instead of a Christmas party and it wouldn't have mattered.

Then you have movies like Meet Me in St. Louis or Fanny and Alexander, which aren't about Christmas, but have MAJOR scenes around the holiday and are integral to the plot and overall feel of the film. Coincidentally both are period films set in 1907-1909. Perfect double feature.

Yeah, I almost posted these and the other Shane Black films, but it seemed too obvious at the time. Might as well roll Batman Returns in with the lot as well.

I reckon a lot of us across the pond frankly couldn't GAF about the thanksgiving setting and just considered Planes, Trains And Automobiles a Christmas. Close enough.

I don't think we ever mention Thanksgiving movies, or pretty much any other Holiday themed movies, even though they all would have examples.
