United Kingdom Hannie Caulder (Tigon Collection) (88 Films)

Pre-order: Amazon.co.uk
Release date: 27th May, 2024

Quote:
After she is sexually assaulted and her husband is murdered, Hannie Caulder vows to take revenge on the three criminals who wrecked her life. She hires bounty hunter Thomas Price, to train her to be a gunslinger so that she might seek out and kill the perpetrators. However, her plan of retribution will not run as smoothly as she had hoped. This unusual British western starring Raquel Welch, Robert Culp, and Christopher Lee is directed by cowboy movie veteran Burt Kennedy and packs a powerful punch.

Just separate Blu-ray and DVD releases for this one, it seems. No UHD.

Raquel Welch has a timeless sexuality about her.

Must be why the box has a label over her reading "T E M P O R T A R T".

It will be interesting to see what transfer 88 are using.

There were 2 releases from Olive, the first was not much better than a DVD upscale, the second which was a "signature edition" was much better.

A terrific wee Western. Moment to moment, it never fails to entertain. Add all those moments together, regarding the film as a unified whole, it really punches above its weight. It's a vigorous, under-appreciated contender that's all the more remarkable given it's a British film!

I watched Hannie Caulder last night, and came away very impressed indeed. Tarantino's spot on as to Robert Culp, who delivers a decidedly understated - yet striking - performance; one that's magnetic to both camera and (at least this) viewer. The violence is visceral and shocking, and it loudly bears the influence of The Wild Bunch (1969).

[Show spoiler] The gang rape is executed with real power, and is horrifying - the camera itself recoils at the terrible violations. Of minor interest here is Strother Martin, whose gun-toting lowlife is shown to be impotent of the terrible act. This actor plays a remarkably similar role to that he portrayed in The Wild Bunch where, the story goes, he and L.Q. Jones asked to portray their characters as a homosexual couple. Peckinpah agreed. In Hannie Calder, Martin plays his role as if that same character in The Wild Bunch, and he is taunted throughout as to his 'manliness' and impotence. In both films, he is shown to be a hyena-like louse, but Martin's is also a character of overt sensitivity, liable to frequent emotional outbursts. I love this small causality of characterisation that exists between the two films. Hannie Caulder wears its Wild Bunch influence almost as a badge.

Other, more informed, Western aficionados may be able to chip in as to whether Strother Martin employed this characterisation in other western pictures, following The Wild Bunch.

All this just to say yes: bring on the Tigon-branded, 88 Films release of Hannie Caulder on blu-ray. I'll get my order in - along with The Beast In The Cellar - just as soon as HMV has it listed!

And we all know why I'm waiting to pre-order from HMV

'Can you stick this temporary tart on the wall and see if my prescription needs altering'.

A lot more than that first cover anyhoo.

That first pic - she looks more akin to ginger spice.

IIRC Paramount (who has US distro rights) holds all the preprints and were the ones who created the remaster the Olive SE used. I imagine 88 will be using that same master unless the Tigon owners only gave them the old Paramount master used on Olives first BD.

Will 88 use the unfiltered master and the bonus materials from the US signature edition?

And will it be completely uncut (can't remember if this movie has any illegal horse falls).
