Post Ultimate 4K Movie Titles List on Disney+

Hey folks,

Rather than sticking solely to Google Sheets, I decided to create a single web page for cataloging all the 4K movies available on my favourite service, Disney+.

The single page offers quick navigation and dynamic filters, making it easier to browse 4K movies (each movie has a toggle feature, allowing us to expand or contract its details as needed). Also, I deep into the tech details like playback support, audio formats, aggregating scores from different sources and a bit more.

If you're keen to explore for yourself, head over to 4kfilmdb.com

I'll be continuously updating the list whenever new 4K titles are released. Any feedbacks, bug reports, killer features/filter suggestions for improving the page is appreciated.

I hope you'll find as fun and useful as I do.

Cheers

Default Changelog Feb 26, 2024

110 Films Added:

. For example, 'Toy Story 2' is only available in HD (Australia) but in 4K (other regions).
. 'Suncoast' (2024) plus 108 previously missing titles: Not available in the US (mostly titles on Hulu) but available in other regions such as AU, CA, and UK.

Known bug:

. The balanced score is not being calculated correctly when both Rotten Tomatoes (Critics or Audience) and Letterboxd scores are missing for certain films (only a few).

<end>

Question

Poll has been added to the thread. Please take a moment to vote, thank you.

Due to the fact that Disney+ has been releasing VERY few 4K titles (both old and new), I'm considering cataloging (to start with) the newest 4K releases (those produced) in 2024 on Netflix and Prime Video. This is due to the large number of current 4K titles (around 1900). Then, based on my availability, I would collect titles from previous years. What do you guys think?

Top IMAX ENHANCED Sunday picks

If you've already had a chance to watch, it's time to revisit or watch for the first time... these are my 4K recommendations in IMAX ENHANCED (+ Dolby Vision/Atmos) format for your Sunday. Have you seen these movies?

1) Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)

2) Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018)

3) Doctor Strange (2016)

Second major update coming in the next couple of days, so stay tuned. The list of 4K movies will be expanded to include Netflix / Prime Video (starting from the release year 2024 and beyond) and Apple TV+, with every title available in 4K.

Meanwhile, I'd like to introduce my own "HDR Score" (based on the static metadata sent by the movie content to the display), which I'll be explaining in further detail later. But for now, I want to recommend one of the best 4K movies (let's bear in mind, streaming and specifically on Disney+) to test the HDR capabilities of any display (TV, projector): "Toy Story 3".

Please check it out for yourself its excellent HDR. Noticeable distinct highlights and shadows, great blacks and vibrant colors. Similarly, "Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 3" and "Solo: A Star Wars Story" are two other examples (non-animation) that offer excellent HDR, but a notch below.

An older movie capable of delivering excellent HDR is "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" (1988).

A bit of disappointment comes with "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms". Limited HDR impact and to be honest, appear closer to a SDR movie...

Unfortunately, Disney+ doesn't provide static metadata information for every movie, but it covers about 20-25% of the total 4K movie library what I've found so far.

Cheers

Post Changelog Mar 06, 2024

Hey everyone (anybody here? ),

I hope you find the new 'HDR Analysis and Score' features as helpful as I do!

2 New Films Added:

. Iwájú: A Day Ahead (AU/CA/UK/US) and Morbius (US).

(Minor) known bug:

. 'Where to Watch' section: Duplicate US flag displayed when it's the only available country/region. Only one movie (Morbius) is affected.

New features:

. Now HDR analysis of the movie content!
. Added a new filter to search by HDR Score!

I believe a bit of explanation is necessary...

'Maximum Mastering Display Brightness' indicates the peak brightness level the movie was mastered for, aiming to achieve the highest possible brightness during playback. However, the actual brightness depends on the capabilities of YOUR display.

'Minimum Mastering Display Black Level' indicates the lowest brightness (or black) level of a mastered movie.

PEAK BRIGHTNESS (or MaxCLL) indicates the absolute brightest point in the entire film.

AVERAGE BRIGHTNESS (or MaxFALL) essentially represents the average luminance of the brightest frame.
  • These values are crucial for HDR displays to properly reproduce the intended brightness and contrast of the content.
  • MaxCLL and MaxFALL are static metadata, meaning they apply to the entire movie and don't change throughout.
  • MaxCLL allows for a wider range of brightness between highlights and shadows, potentially leading to a more visually impactful HDR experience.
  • There's a limit. If MaxCLL is significantly higher than YOUR display's capabilities (mine is 750 nits), it can lead to clipping (where highlights lose detail). Display calibration is important here, however for Dolby Vision and HDR10+ is a different story due to their nature (dynamic metadata)...
