"The Last Kumite" is an action-packed Old School Martial Arts film in the style of "Bloodsport", "Kickboxer" and "No Retreat, No Surrender".
Director and cinematographer Ross W. Clarkson ("Undisputed 2", "Undisputed 3", "Ninja: Shadow of a Tear") and stunt coordinator Mike Möller ("Matrix Resurrections", "Resident Evil") reunite some of the most famous Martial Arts stars of the 80s and 90s. Starring Mathis Landwehr, Kurt McKinney ("No Retreat, No Surrender"), Cynthia Rothrock, Billy Blanks, Matthias Hues ("Dark Angel"), David "Bolo Jr" Yeung, Mounia Moula ("No Time To Die"), David Kurzhal (Viking Samurai) and Michel Qissi (Tong Po). Music by Paul Hertzog ("Bloodsport", "Kickboxer"). The movie will be about Michael Rivers, who is a skilled martial artist and is forced to fight in an illegal fighting tournament in order to save his daughter. Along his journey he discovers other martial artists have been forced to fight to save their loved ones. When Karate champion Michael Rivers (Mathis Landwehr) wins the last tournament of his career, shady businessman Ron Hall (Matthias Hues) offers him the opportunity to fight in an illegal, deadly Kumite in Bulgaria with the worlds best martial artists. Michael declines, only to find out later that his daughter Bree has been kidnapped and that in order to rescue her, he is left with no other option but to fight in the deadly tournament. When he finally gets to Bulgaria, he finds out that he is not the only fighter whose loved one got taken. Now, in order to beat the undefeated Kumite Champion Dracko, Michael trains with Master Loren (Billy Blanks), and Dracko's former Sensei, Julie Jackson (Cynthia Rothrock). But will it be enough for him to win the tournament and save his daughters life? I'm keeping my expectations low.
I love those classic movies, with Hues, Cynthia, etc. but sadly these kind of "reunion" movies (especially Kickstarted by youtubers), usually end up being terrible. It's just impossible to emulate the feeling of those 80:s-90:s Corey Yuen classics, like No Retreat No Surrender, King of the Kickboxers, etc. And even those movies, had a scale and budget, that the B movies don't have today. They had huge explosions, and dangerous stunts. Also the over the top acting, back then, especially during the fights, was pure magic. The cheap digital look of that trailer didn't help. They should add some filters, to try to make it look more like film. |

The original digital camera source was very sharp, with drab colors, a flat and ugly look. |

Saw the film yesterday. It's a true love letter to the great martial arts films of the 80s and 90s. Bloodsport and Kickboxer in particular. The Last Kumite indeed feels like a mix between these two films. The music is easily the best thing about this movie. It's a phenomenal score by Paul Hertzog, who came out of retirement for this movie (Bloodsport, Kickboxer). It really elevates the film to a whole different level. The two songs by Stand Bush are also great. There are many training sequences throughout the first half of the film. They are done very well. Especially the final one, which gave me goosebumps. The second half of the film is centered around the kumite. The fight choreography is good. It's shot and edited in the spirit of Bloodsport. Sometimes they even resemble a beautiful dance, mainly in slow motion - all driven by Hertzog's excellent score. The Last Kumite really does feel like one of those 80s martial arts films that we all grew up with. This is a passion project and you can feel it for the entirety of its runtime. Yes, there are shortcomings, of course. But that was to be expected and it's never on a distracting level. In fact, it adds to its B movie charme. The cast is also stellar, consisting of many legends from the past. I enjoyed this movie very much.

I just watched it. Yes you can see it is low budget and a but trashy but I had a lot of fun.
As a kid I watched a lot of these DTV Martial Arts Movies and this movie is the pure spirit of Bloodsport and Kickboxer. Matthias Hues had seemly a lot of fun to play the villain as usual and Kurt McKinney was in a good shape for his age. The fights are not The Raid Level but still very good and ypi csn see every second it is a hommage of these old Fighter movies. The Score was just pure awesome. Still I think you didn't grew up with those old movies won't like Ladt Kumite. But for me it was a lot of fun. |
