United Kingdom The Last Starfighter 4K UHD ( (1984) Arrow Video

Arrow will be releasing The Last Starfighter on 4K in the UK in July. This UK release will be missing a commentary track, image gallery, and two archival extras that were included on the US release (due to rights issues presumably).

Quote:
  • Brand new 4K restoration by Arrow Films from the original camera negative
  • 4K (2160p) Ultra HD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible)
  • Uncompressed 2.0 stereo, 5.1 DTS-HD MA and 4.1 audio
  • Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • Audio commentary with star Lance Guest and his son Jackson Guest
  • Audio commentary with Mike White of The Projection Booth podcast
  • Maggie's Memories: Revisiting The Last Starfighter - interview with actor Catherine Mary Stewart
  • Into the Starscape: Composing The Last Starfighter - interview with composer Craig Safan
  • Incredible Odds: Writing The Last Starfighter - interview with screenwriter Jonathan Betuel
  • Interstellar Hit-Beast: Creating the Special Effects - interview with special effects supervisor Kevin Pike
  • Excalibur Test: Inside Digital Productions - interview with sci-fi author Greg Bear on Digital Productions, the company responsible for the CGI in The Last Starfighter
  • Greetings Starfighter! Inside the Arcade Game - an interview with arcade game collector Estil Vance on reconstructing the Starfighter game
  • Theatrical and teaser trailers
  • Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Matt Ferguson
  • Illustrated collector's booklet featuring writing by Amanda Reyes and sci-fi author Greg Bear's Omni magazine article on Digital Productions, the company responsible for the CGI in The Last Starfighter
  • Limited Edition slipcover featuring newly commissioned artwork by Matt Ferguson

Okay, I've burned myself with this, as I've imported it from the US when it was released there... It seems to be the exact same disc, maybe some logo differences here and there, right?

Yeah, should be the same. This is made possible because of the new Warner deal. The rights in the US were with Universal, but Warner had it in the UK, so Arrow couldn't release it previously.

edit: I'm mistaken. There are 3 extras missing, see the posts below.

I understand why they are releasing it now, thank you!

Yeah, Alex is right. It is missing the commentary, image galleries, and two archival extras that were on the US release. I assume those were produced by Universal, and could not be ported over.

its just a shame that its not the same release as the US version cause there is three special features missing from the UK release and its the 1999 commentary and the two making's of documentary's plus the image galleries.

I caved in and bought the US edition late last year, having last seen this film when I saw it at the cinema on release. I had given up hope of it getting a UK release, but those missing features wouldn't have bothered me, I don't think I've looked at a single one of the extras on the US one. Ironically, this is probably the only one of the latest announced releases that I would have bought!

I'm confused - is the US getting a new re-release too, or is this the UK debut? In which case, we should just get the US version?

No re-release for the US, just the UK debut. But yeah, given the choice between the two releases, I'd opt for the US one since it isn't missing extras.

Oh, less extras? I guess I should not regret my purchase from US then.

Wonder if the encode of the main feature is the same, and weather they'd have to trim off or replace the Universal logo at the start?

My guess would be a completely different disc since they had to reauthor it because of the extras differences - so probably new logos too. As for the quality of the encode, I'd not expect much difference there, since the US one was (also) handled by FiM.

Knowing the UK luck, they may have removed 3 extras to make room for extra audio and subtitle tracks since our discs seem to have to work for everyone else.

Because Arrow is a major studio and releases their discs all over Europe?

isn't this significant since apparently the UK hasn't had a home video release of this title since the VHS days?

It's a rights issue.

Simples.

Should be, but those on that side of the pond who know this movie have already imported.
