Default Should I wait for Profile 2.0 before buying my first player?

Hi. I'm a new user, this is my first post, and I've been with Blu-Ray since the beginning. I've been waiting until I was sure Blu-Ray had won before I bought a player, but since HD DVD has crashed, burned, and been cut up into many pieces and sold as chicken breast, before being just plain cancelled, I pass this question to you:

Should I wait for Profile 2.0 before I buy my first player?

Since the cheapest Blu-Ray player is still £250 here in the UK, it seems like a bit of a waste of money to buy a Profile 1.1 now and then have 2.0 come out a few months down the line, but then again, will the releases really harness Profile 2.0's abilities?

Is it worth the wait? Or should I just buy now and claim my 6 free titles from Sony before the offer's over?

It depends. If online features and downloads are important to you, then wait for 2.0. If you only care about the movie, a 1.0 or 1.1 player is adequate. Not all releases will take advantage of 2.0, but only time will tell just how many do.

if you're looking for a standalone, by all means hold out for the BD50, otherwise a ps3 might be right up your alley.

How do you think they'll utilise downloads?

I wouldn't wait for the profile. I would buy the PS3 so you'll be able to update the firmware to 2.0 for sure when it becomes available. If you aren't going to buy the PS3, I would probably wait for one of those 2.0 Panasonics that were recently announced.

PS3 is starting to have some pretty good games as well.

In all honesty it depends on the above post as well as how you feel about going down the PS 3 route mate? I know a lot of people that initially refused to buy what they viewed as a "games console" even though for the vast majority of people it fits the bill and then some for what they want..

If you do want a player now then you could always grab a Ps 3 bundle with Drakes Fortune and Ninja Gaiden from play.com for £299.99 and just flog the games back on ebay again basically bringing you down to the basic profile 1.0 player cost..

I second that; the PS3 is a safe buy now as it will be upgraded to profile 2.0. If you want a standalone, I would wait for the Panasonic BD50.

I would wait but NOT for the reasons you mentionned above (profile 2.0) but for these reasons:

Wait for a player that can decode INTERNALY and EXTERNALY (bitstream) both the Dolby TrueHD AND DTS-HD MA audio codecs.

In April 2008 Panasonic is due to release the BD50 which complies with the above and as a "bonus" is actually Profile 2.0 compliant

I would buy a PS3, but you see, my parents still pay for this sort of stuff, and they probably wouldn't want to buy a PS3, even though it's one of the cheapest, and the only futureproof player out there. I already have a 360 and Wii, though, in all honesty, I'd part with my 360 for a PS3.

Who knows? I'll ask about it anyway.

Mate.. I'd part with my parents for a Ps 3 let alone another console...
In all seriousness personally I'd part with the Wii and keep the 360 but thats just me.

Up to you really. All BD Live offers over BonusView is networking support [and the storage to support the networking stuff].

Not something I'm personally interested in, but I also have a PS3 so it's a non-issue for me.

I personally do not want a profile 2.0, I see no need in internet conectivity. Profile 1.0 is good enough for me, maybe 1.1 but I probably wouldnt use any of the features available from that either. when I get a movie I watch the movie, and maybe a few extras like deleted scenes, outtakes, and occasionally a making or behind the scens feature.

if you just want it for movies get the 40gb ps3. but if you want to wait you could wait on the rumored 120gb ps3. just my opinion but standalones are a waste of money.
