Stanton is a legend and there’s yet to be a bad Toy Story. But Dory was a bit lacking, along with other Pixar sequels, so we’ll see.

What do you mean by “lacking”?

Stanton was also one of the story writers of all four previous movies. I think this one is in good hands.

I wasn't crazy about 4, it's getting harder to find a good story after 3

4 was better than 3 at least.

My absolute favorite was Toy Story 2 and I still watch it from time to time, but TS3+ the quality has certainly decreased and it's not as good as the first two.

I hope there won't be Toy Story 10 just for the sake of milking it. Even Toy Story 5 is feeling like stretching it.

DreamWorks was wise to end Shrek than end up ruining it completely and Disney should have allowed Toy Story to wrap up its story, too. Well, guess it's not happening... Look at the Star Wars mess.

You can never be entirely sure when a story is fully finished in a movie series, because there’s always a chance a creator will get a “Eureka!” moment, and comes up with a way to continue the story.

Andrew Stanton, didn't he direct John Carter of Mars? That was a fun, entertaining adventure movie.

You should probably wait until D23 in August for official director confirmation

But Bob Iger has said Disney make too sequels and yet that all they are doing. I love the Toy series Toy Story 4 ended the series well and I feel that this could be a step too far for the series.

There's no narrative way to do it without either a) undoing the ending of TS4 and consequently robbing it of all its poignancy. Or b) having Woody and Buzz on separate adventures, which denies us the odd couple / buddy dynamic that has underpinned the whole series. That'd be like having Butch without Sundance or Riggs without Murtaugh.

Either way it's lose / lose.

If Elemental has proven anything, it’s to never underestimate Pixar.

4 already kind of hurts 3s ending a little. Turned out Andy probably should have taken Woody to college after all. I wouldn't mind undoing 4s ending.

I love 1-3. I go back and forth between 2 and 3 as the favorite. 4 wasnt bad or anything... It was fine... but thats it.

Isn’t that how most sequels work, anyway? Doesn’t every sequel ever kind of already undo the previous movie’s ending, in a way?

Every sequel ever? No. None of the Indiana Jones movies undo what came before. The last two are trash, but I can't think of a thing they "undid".

Alien 3 however.

They’re not trash, IMO. In fact, I nearly teared up at the end of DoD.

Sometimes it works better than others. It depends how well its done. Again I wouldn't mind seeing TS 5 try.

Toy Story 3 doesn't really undo anything in 2. If anything it completely pays it off. They end 2 with Woody and Buzz talking about what happens when Andy grows up. And 3 shows what happens when he finally does.

TV Tropes makes a point about this thing called the “Sequel Reset.” When this kind of thing is done well, it can open up a story that we'd thought was finished for a rewarding further installment. After all, life goes on even for fictional characters, and just because everything looked tied up with a neat little bow at the end of one installment doesn't mean that the situation might not have changed a little later down the track.
